Nollywood favourite to star in Sou African film

Multiple award-winning actress Nse Ikpe-Etim will play Madeleine in the film Shushh, based on the novel Whiplash by Tracey Farren. The character Madeleine is a refugee who comes to South Africa after suffering horrific war-time in the Congo.

She forms a close bond with Tess, a young sex worker, whose life is in turmoil - to be played by South African actress Christia Visser.

Commenting on the role, Nse said: Direction always comes to play and it would be rude of me not to mention that Megs passion drove me to read the book Whiplash! She believed in it and it became a truth that had to be told. Secondly, it allows me to be part of a story that needs to be given attention. Shushh is such a piercing story and it haunted me for days. A chance to bring Madeleine to life is truly humbling because there is always that one thing which you know has killed your will to die, for death would be far too easy.

Nse has played alongside Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger, and just last year won the Best Actress in a Drama' award at the 2014 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.

Producers Paul Egan and Kim Williams say they are extremely excited to have such an amazing talent on board. Nse not only is one of Nigeria's most sought-after actresses, but she is also a top speaker on Ted Talks and tours the world for her roles.

The film will be directed by Meg Rickards, who recently co-directed the award-winning documentary 1994: the bloody miracle. Commenting on Nse coming on board as Madeleine, Meg says, We are delighted that Nse Ikpe-Etim is going to make her South African debut on Shushh. She is an extraordinary artist, with subtlety and emotional range. I feel privileged to be working with her to tell a story about breaking the silence around the abuse of women and children - endemic in so many parts of our continent.

Nse lives together with her husband Clifford Sule in the United Kingdom, but regularly visits their hometown in Nigeria.

Filming began in September in Muizenberg, Cape Town, and will be released next year.
