Ningbo pay tributes to Run Run Shaw

Sir Run Run Shaw, or Shao Yifu, honorary president of Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Ltd (TVB) and founder of Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Ltd., a media mogul and philanthropist of Hong Kong, passed away at his home in Hong Kong last Tuesday at the age of 106.

Born on Nov. 23, 1907 in Ningbo, Shaw was one of the leading members of the "Ningbo Bang", a group title given to people, especially businessmen, of Ningbo origin involved in commercial activities overseas. People in Ningbo expressed their condolences in various ways to the late Hong Kong movie industry giant, who was committed to philanthropy that benefits his hometown.

Recently, Ningbos Mayor, Luzi Yue, together with local organizations including the Municipal Committee, Municipal Peoples Congress, the municipal government, municipal CPPCC, and Municipal United Front Work Department, the Municipal Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, City Board of Education, City SMG Bureau, and Ningbo University, has been paying tribute to Sir. Run Run Shaw and expressed their condolences to his family.

The Municipal government issued a condolence message, saying the government and people in Ningbo were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sir Run Run and extended their deepest condolences to his family. The letter says Shaw is an outstanding representative of the "Ningbo Bang" and praises Shaws love of his hometown and concern for the people, and his contribution to the development of the nations education, culture and health care. The letter also affirmed Shaws outstanding contributions in deepening exchanges and cooperation between Ningbo and Hong Kong. Shaws patriotism and aspiration will be remembered by the people in his Hometown, said the municipal government.

According to Zhou Minhua, Director of the Ningbo Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, the work of condolence was immediately launched on January 7 after they learned the passing of Sir Run Run. Meanwhile, they immediately contacted the Hong Kong Shaw Foundation, and expressed condolences from city leaders and relevant departments.

Lu Liangbao, former vice chairman of CPPCC, former president of the Ningbo-HK Association, said in an interview, he had met with Sir. Run Run Shaw more than 10 times since the 1980s. The first time he met Shaw was in 1987 when he worked as deputy secretary-general in the municipal government. In a business trip to Hong Kong with other city leaders, he met Sir Shaw in an interview. Friendly and not very talkative, Shaw talked with tem in Ningbo dialect. According to Lu, Shaw asked them, "hows Ningbo now?" He was very concerned about the development of his hometown, especially the development of education and talent training. Lu said: "He has made such generous contribution to the well-being of Ningbo that people here will never forget him."
