We talked about Better Office Builders and their broken source code last week. If they had used a Level Two Verification test it would have highlighted the missing components in the source code before the escrow release. This week we focus on Level Three Verification testing and why it is important to ensure that the escrow deposit is the same as the current technology in place.
As we've discussed, Escrow Verification is used to confirm that an escrow deposit contains everything that is documented in the escrow agreement. If something were to go wrong with your technology vendor, Escrow Verification services provide a quality control mechanism for the escrow deposit. There are four levels of Escrow Verification, with increasingly stringent levels of testing.

At Terry's Testing Labs researchers use a custom application to examine processed foods for their nutritional value. The application Terry uses is stored safely in an escrow account. When the developer released version 2.0 of the application, Terry made sure that the escrow account was updated. It became apparent that version 2.0 needed critical bug fixes, but because the version stored in the escrow account lacked a key custom algorithm the application that Terry's lab uses was slowed to the point where it became a problem for the company.
If Terry's Testing Labs ordered a Level 3: Binary Comparison this problem could have been averted because the comparison would have verified that version 2.0 has the same compilation as version 1.0. Binary Comparison verification testing ensures that the correct version of the code is currently in production.
Binary Comparison is the third level of verification and is primarily performed in those instances where it is either impossible or cost-prohibitive to recreate the user's production environment, but as with Level Two, it does not test the functionality of the code in escrow. Level Four of verification is the only level that tests the full usability of the materials in the account.
