Evolutions opens Bristol facility

The final technical sign off was made yesterday (30 October) in the audio facilities of Evolutions new post-production operation in Bristol. The new dubbing suite features Avid Pro Tools HDX and 11 with an ICON D-Control and is run by head of audio Will Norie, who started with the company at the beginning of this month.

Evolutions Bristol has 30 edit suites and is based on Whiteladies Road just outside the city centre. This area of Bristol is home to a number of media organisations, including the BBC with both its local operation and the Natural History unit.

Announcing the new facility earlier this year, Evolutions managing director, Simon Kanjee, said, "Having had discussions with our existing indie clients in London - as well as local producers in Bristol - we believe there is a significant demand for the scale, speed and quality of post-production service that we can offer."

The audio suite has been designed partly for compatibility with sound facilities at Evolutions in London, housing what Norie (pictured) describes as "pretty much industry standard" equipment. This includes a 16-fader D-Control, HDX hardware with a Z820 workstation and Pro Tools 11 software. Norie, who was previously sound supervisor at Aardman Animations, another leading Bristol media outfit, says the only difference for him is that Pro Tools 11 is running on Windows 7 rather than a Mac operating system. "Ive always worked on Mac," he says, "but this seems like a powerful machine."

The dubbing theatre is fitted out for 5.1 and the first job in there was mixed in the format. "That was a good way to test the studio and flex the muscle of the HDX," comments Norie. A voice booth is attached to the suite, with wiring for two microphones, although only one Neumann U87 is being used right now.

Plug-ins for the Pro Tools include a Waves package, Nugen ISL true peak limiter for loudness and the Zplane PPMulator. Avid equipment was supplied by Scrub, which signed off on the installation on 30 October after some final adjustments, including on the networking to the Avid ISIS server.

A second dubbing theatre is due to be built at Evolutions Bristol in the new year.
