DSTV Now to improve user experience, says CEO

Niclas Ekdahl, the newly-appointed CEO of MultiChoice Africa Groups' Connected Video unit, told Tech Central that significant changes are coming to DTSV and Showmax which will guarantee and effortless experience for subscribers.

Big changes ahead for DSTV Now Ekdahl wants subscribers to find content tailored to their individual tastes and said this would be achieved by harnessing user data to optimise user's experience with the service. He explained told Tech Central:

We are going to build video on demand that is really effortless for consumers. We're not there yet, and there is a long journey ahead of us, but we will get there.

He described DSTV Now as a little too chunky at the moment and vowed that the service would be revamped in due course. Only a handful of 4K devices are connected to high-speed internet, and while it's not impossible for the majority of South African's to log into the DSTV NOw, it's not ideal. DSTV Now has approximately 250 000 active daily users.

The MultiChoice team will focus on improving user experience first, and Ekdahl wants to bring down the lowest bitrate to make it more affordable on mobile. At the moment, some of DSTV's 1080p channels adapt according to the slower connection, meaning mobile users get a less bandwidth-intensive experience, and Ekdahl wants to deliver the top-notch quality people are asking for.

Image credit: Pixabay Coming to Showmax Showmax subscribers can look forward to a new series, the locally produced murder mystery The Girl From St Agnes. Most of the series was filmed in a town called Ixopo in the South Africa Midlands.

The story plays out at a boarding school and follows the mysterious death of a student as the teachers and students attempt to uncover the truth. The Girl From St Agnes centres around themes such as misogyny as well as teenage sexuality and identity.

It is set to premiere on Showmax in January 2019 and will consist of eight episodes, approximately 52 minutes each. The show's producer, Harriet Gavshon, explained that the show is based on her own experiences of boarding school. She told Variety:

It's a universal story set in an environment that's recognisable. Even though it has some things that are very peculiar to South Africa. [ ] The issues are very universal, and they're issues that are very much in the zeitgeist now.
