VMware Horizon View Given Target Platform' Status By Major Electronic Medical Records Vendor First Among Virtual Desktop Providers Clinical Virtual Desktop Service Using VMware AlwaysOn Point of Care Offers High Availability, Strong Security and Greater Mobility PALO ALTO, Calif., May 8, 2013 VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced that Epic has given Target Platform status to VMware Horizon View for electronic medical records (EMR) delivery through a virtual clinical desktop. VMware is the first VDI solution provider to receive this status by passing a wide range of usability, performance and scalability tests. The end result is a validated implementation solution that can significantly improve clinical desktop availability, security and mobility while assisting provider organizations with industry compliance requirements.

According to industry research firm IDC, 60 percent of healthcare organizations have already moved to managing medical records electronically, but many struggle with the second phase of their modernization effort, which requires management of distributed endpoints such as desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones used by caregivers and administrative staff members i. Supporting these devices in-person becomes a logistical burden that involves high operational expenses. In addition, adoption of electronic medical records sets expectations of greater administrative and clinical efficiencies that may not be realized without appropriate support and management tools.
VMware AlwaysOn Point of Care , built on Horizon Viewenables Epic customers to quickly modernize their computing environment and accelerate toward a cloud-based clinical workstation with always-on service from the data center. IT administrators have full remote control over distributed desktops to support end users, perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot problems from a single, centralized location. Caregivers get remote access to clinical desktops using any device, which offers physicians a more flexible, more secure and convenient way to treat patients. Patients benefit from clinicians being able to quickly access their medical records with the swipe of a badge or tap of a fingerprint without the delays that can occur when waiting for clinical desktops to boot or patient information to load.
Our organization saves $1.6 million annually by using virtual clinical desktops to access EpicCare through VMware Horizon View , said William Lewkowski, chief information officer, Metro Health Corporation. Physician satisfaction has improved because they have anywhere/anytime access to information such as clinical images or patient information when outside the hospital using their own devices such as iPads. Our nurses can now move from workstation to workstation and use their ID badge to tap into virtual clinical desktops and have their session follow them from device to device it is fast and extremely efficient.
Moving Desktops to the Cloud
