NAB Show 2019 has officially kicked off in Las Vegas with a range of exciting announcements from the media broadcast industry's leading players.

Sony unveiled a new live camera system, the HDC-5500, demonstrating its 4K, 8K, HDR and HFR capabilities. The company also introduced a firmware update for the VENICE Digital Cinema motion picture camera system, which adds HFR shooting of 4K 120fps and 6K 60fps. Version 4.0 firmware is planned to be made available in June.

Meanwhile the newly merged NewTek and Vizrt launched their latest video-over-IP solution, NDI 4, feauturing the ability to record unlimited NDI video channels for true multi-camera editing with full synchronisation. NewTek also announced the latest version of Premium Access, enabling unlimited recording and replay for efficient delivery to digital screens.

Grass Valley announced the release of GV Fabric, a high-speed COTS IP switch designed for open architecture broadcast, media and entertainment environments. Adding that 77 per cent of its revenues now come from live production and that 78 per cent of OB trucks globally have Grass Valley equipment in them, the company said GV Fabric is a compact, scalable solution suited to studios, master control rooms and outside broadcasting.

Avid also launched the redesigned Media Composer, its flagship video editing system. Media Composer 2019 allows editors to go from first cut to delivery without ever leaving the application. It includes the Next Generation Avid Media Engine and Customisable Toolset, offering unparalleled security to lock down content, reducing the chances of unauthorised leaks of sensitive media.

Swiss production and broadcast company tpc is building an all-IP news, sport and technology centre in Zurich, accommodating the need to produce and finish programming in any resolution up to UHD HDR, and to deliver in multiple languages, to multiple platforms including broadcast, mobile and online services. The new studio is expected to go on air in late 2019.

The only way to achieve the level of flexibility we need in a practical, operationally secure and cost-effective form is to take advantage of software-defined systems connected over IP.
