Visual studio ALMA MATER recently collaborated with 22 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on the closing credits for the action-comedy starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. The Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures film, which is now playing in theaters nationwide, had the second-best opening weekend for an R-rated comedy of all time.
ALMA MATER, led by Partner/Creative Director Brian Mah, worked closely with Lord and Miller to create the closing credits: an elaborate gag featuring a few dozen movie poster spoofs that reveal endless possibilities for continuing the Jump Street franchise, from 23 Jump Street: Medical School to 2121 Jump Street (in outer space) to Infinity Jump Street.
This is Mahs third collaboration with the acclaimed directing duo, after previously serving as creative director for the main-on-end titles of The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street along with ALMA MATER partners Kathy Kelehan, Executive Producer, and James Anderson, VFX & Animation Supervisor.
Lord and Miller said, We had a great partnership with ALMA MATER on 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie and were excited to try something even more ambitious with the end credits on 22 Jump Street. We had a great back and forth collaboration and they once again surprised us with their creativity and humor.
We love working with Phil and Chris, says Mah. Everyone had such a great experience together, so when we wrapped up our collaboration on The LEGO Movie, we rolled right into this one. Having worked with Phil and Chris on back-to-back projects, we definitely feel there's a mutual respect and shorthand to our communication, which makes the creative process more efficient and smooth.
The entire sequence was shot in just one day. Once the team all agreed on the direction of the various scenarios, ALMA MATER spent a week prepping for the one-day shoot with the cast. While Phil and Chris shot the live-action scenes, we shot hundreds of stills of the cast, says Mah. The actors would bounce back and forth between our sets throughout the day, changing into a new costumes for each sequel.
After the shoot, ALMA MATER set to work designing and integrating all of the various elements that would make up the sequence. In just four weeks, ALMA MATER produced 21 full-scale movie posters, a realistic-looking video game, and a cel-animated cartoon, as well as action figures, lunchboxes, and board games based on the film.
We also did another shoot with kids interacting with the toys we created, adds Mah. It was a crazy month for our extended team of 50+ people, and everyone was excited to see it come together in the end.
Despite the tight turnaround, ALMA MATERs creative team felt inspired by the wide variety of hilarious material they could leverage.
Building each piece of artwork in this sequence was really fun, concludes Mah. We tried to make ourselves laugh with each new creation. One person would design a poster with Jonah in tights for a dance academy mission, while someone else would be painting in God rays behind the guys dressed like priests. As far as what made us laugh the hardest, it would definitely be the board game. Working with directors that are as talented and collaborative as Phil and Chris has become pretty addicting. You always want to figure out a way to make a great project with great people work out, even if the schedule is demanding!
In 22 Jump Street, after making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they dont have to just crack the case-they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them. Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. Screenplay by Michael Bacall and Oren Uziel and Rodney Rothman, from a story by Michael Bacall & Jonah Hill, based on the television series 21 Jump Street created by Patrick Hasburgh & Stephen J. Cannell. The film is produced by Neal H. Moritz, Jonah Hill, and Channing Tatum.
