Jo Cole is the Content Operations Intern at YouView. She has just finished her second year studying Maths at The University of Birmingham.
This summer I have been lucky enough to be doing a Content Operations internship here at YouView which I originally found out about through Target jobs and the YouView website.
Prior to applying to YouView, I did a lot of searching around and reading up on what the internship entailed and decided that this internship sounded perfect; a great mix of problem solving and people skills. The application process was surprisingly straight forward; I applied online via the YouView website and within a week or two was invited to an interview.
After a quick chat on the phone to one of the lovely ladies from HR, it was all arranged and I came down to the office in Central London and had my interview. When I arrived at the interview I was greeted by the friendly faces of Chris and David who showed me around and really made me feel welcome in the office. The interview itself was very casual; a chat about what experience I had, why I wanted the internship and what I wanted to gain from it.
About two days after my interview I had a phone call and was offered the position! After accepting all I had to do was fill in a few forms and I was in! It was a couple of months until I started the internship from when I was offered the job and during this time Selina from HR set up an intern's Facebook group where we could chat to other interns and discuss living arrangements and things. The office is in a fantastic location in central London right on the Thames which has amazing transport links so travel arrangements were never a worry.
Selina kept us updated with the news and highlights of things that were going on in the company which really got me excited for the start of the internship. Even before the first day I began to feel involved in the company and very welcome.
Speaking to a number of the interns here the application process does vary slightly depending on which department you apply for. Some departments give applicants a task to complete before an interview to challenge the skills they may need for the role. This could be anything from a design challenge to a presentation on a case study or a demonstration of something you have created. But don't worry; full information and advice was given at least a week or two before the interview so there was plenty of time to prepare. I don't know anyone that didn't enjoy their interview process so just stay calm and prepare well!
My top tips and advice:
Apply early
Research your chosen role, the company, product and industry really well
Give examples of your previous work and how they apply directly to the role at YouView to show off your full potential
Try to stay calm in your interview! Think logically and show common sense when justifying decisions.
Enjoy yourself! YouView is a great company to work for with a fantastic atmosphere and the most talented people in the industry as colleagues.
