From Studio To Live Venue Paul David Hager Finds Plenty Of Work For His New Maselec MLA-3

As Front of House engineer for artists such as Miley Cyrus, Beck and Devo and mix engineer for the likes of Katy Perry, Pink, Selena Gomez and the Jonas Brother, Paul David Hagers work life is split evenly between the studio and the live environment. No wonder, then, that when it comes to buying pro audio equipment he is always on the look-out for items that are equally at home in both settings.

Hagers most recent purchase a Maselec MLA-3 Multiband Compressor does just that. Designed with comprehensive controls for a very wide range of sounds, this three-band compressor with adjustable crossover frequencies is equally at home in Hagers Los Angeles studio as it is on the road where he uses it across the main mix to the PA system.

I first came across the MLA-3 when I heard it in Andy Meyers live set up he had it across his main outs on the Justin Timberlake tour and it sounded amazing, Hager says. I must admit Id been on the fence about buying one for my studio but after hearing what it could do for my live mix, I definitely had to get one for my next tours with Beck and Miley Cyrus.

As one of the few sound engineers who makes records and tours, Hager believe that although they are different skills - creating sound for a concert and sculpting the sonics for a record are two sides of the same coin. His ideal is to bring the punch and energy of a live show into the studio, and the clarity and depth of the studio to the concert stage.

To this end he has a studio at Encore Recording in Burbank, which is based around a Pro Tools 12.8 HDx2 system with 64 IO for patching outboard gear. He also has a wealth of analogue compressors and effects including his new MLA-3. Maselec is distributed in the Americas by Prism Sound distributor, Prism Media Products Inc, and Hagers unit was supplied by Vintage King.

The audio quality of Maselec and Prism Sound equipment is just great, Hager says, and Im certainly finding that my new MLA-3 really tightens up the sound of my mix. Im now using it in the studio on a new record by Hoobastank and a few others. Then it will make its way back into my live setup in readiness for the forthcoming Beck and Miley Cyrus tours.
