From adorable animals to looping videos of the most memorable moments in television and everything in between, the animated GIF has been spreading its way through the interwebs like wildfire. In iStopMotion 3.2 for Mac, you can save any sequence of up to 200 frames as an animated GIF right to your hard drive. In iStopMotion for iPad 2.2, you can export the first 200 frames of your animation as an animated GIF and send it by email or iMessage or upload it to your DropBox.
iStopMotions new support for animated GIF export is a brilliant addition to an already fantastic product, says Charlie Collier, iStopMotion enthusiast who's created professional work such as Ballad of a Prodigal Son (more info) and most recently created the above animated GIF of his now-famous twist-tie characters (more info). This new feature is a great way for animators of all levels to share snippets of their work in a quick and easy manner. And with the raising popularity of animated GIFs in the internet culture, It will hopefully inspire others to do the same. I can say with confidence that Ill be using this new feature quite a bit!
In its 26 years of existence, the animated GIF has never seen such popularity. Technology columnist David Pogue attributes the internet's obsession with micro videos such as GIFs to a number of theories: technical limitations of smart phones and tablets, and the fact that GIFs can play on almost any browser without a plugin; the idea that limitations foster creativity (for example, Twitter's 140 character limits and Vine's six-second video limit); and finally, that these short clips should not be viewed as stripped-down movies, but rather as live-action photographs that far exceed the story-telling capabilities of the still image. iStopMotion Preferences With a Modern Twist
iStopMotion for iPad can now be configured to display only specific export options. This will allow educators to restrict the use of export options that are difficult to manage in environments where multiple people use the iPads.
