Diving into the Heart of Korean Creativity

Last weekend, I was delighted to visit Seoul to connect with the creators of our K-Content lineup. Korea has such a rich history of creativity and storytelling and it's exciting to see audiences outside of Korea discover shows and movies like Squid Game, All of Us are Dead, The Glory, and Mask Girl.

Of course, I couldn't visit Korea without experiencing the production of one of our most anticipated shows of 2024 - the second season of Squid Game. While I can't share any spoilers, I can say the new games will blow your mind, and I was thrilled by the scale of the sets. Director Hwang's vision is such a powerful example of how Korean - and non-English titles - can be locally authentic while finding new international audiences on Netflix.

It was also my honor to meet President Yoon, together with Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae, to reaffirm our commitment to the industry and to the next generation of Korean creatives. We are investing significantly in Korea, and believe that working with best-in-class local industry partners is only the beginning.

We also believe it's important to invest in the next generation of storytellers in Korea, so we will continue to ensure to spotlight new voices in front and behind the camera. Between 2022 and 2025, one in five Netflix titles in Korea will come from a first-time writer or director. Last year, that included the creators behind Unlocked, Doona!, Siren: Survive the Island, and Black Knight. This year, we're providing a global stage for the first-time filmmakers behind The Bequeathed, Badland Hunters, My Name is Loh Kiwan and The Frog.

At the new Eyeline Studios VFX Korea office, I enjoyed meeting with young VFX artists who have done tremendous work across Netflix projects like Yu Yu Hakusho and Rebel Moon. They began with only five people in the Seoul office in 2019, and Eyeline Studios is now the home to more than 130 local VFX artists including those who were hired after completing the Netflix VFX Academy internship program in Korea. Seven in 10 of the graduates from the first session of the Netflix VFX Academy Internship program have since been hired by Netflix Partners, and graduates from future sessions are expected to play an active role in the Korean creative industry.

It's heartening to see our shared love for storytelling, and our commitment to delighting our audiences, coming to life one amazing story at a time as the world watches.
