Expert Panel, Discussion of Standards Activities to Top Agenda at Special Session

SEPT. 24, 2013 (Exton, PA) The development of standards for helping cable system networks withstand adverse natural events and sustain high levels of service will be the focus when the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) hosts a special standards session on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2013.

The session, entitled "Business Continuity and the Need for Highly Available Networks," will include a discussion of current and planned SCTE standardization and best-practice activities, as well as a panel of industry experts who will explore such topics as: power reliability, dependency of Emergency Alert on network availability, business continuity planning and crisis management.

Panelists for the session will be:

Brian Allen, chief of security, Time Warner Cable;

David Geary, director of engineering for the StarLine DC Solutions division of Universal Electric Corp.; and

Albert Straub, principal architect, Time Warner Cable.

The 90-minute session will begin at 11 a.m.

"In recent years, cable has experienced widespread service outages and has incurred enormous costs as a result of the effects of destructive events such as Superstorm Sandy," said Marty Davidson, vice president, engineering and operations for SCTE and head of the ANSI-accredited SCTE Standards Program. "It's essential that we begin to develop standards that can help us plan for, withstand and recover quickly from events that impact our customers and disrupt normal business operations and revenue generation."

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2013 is set for Monday through Thursday, Oct. 21-24. Two pre-conference symposia, "DOCSIS 3.1 Engineering" and "Creating the Cable Generalist," will be held on Monday, Oct. 21. SCTE Cable-Tec Expo and the symposia will take place at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. The Oct. 22 Opening General Session will include a keynote conversation between NCTA President & CEO Michael Powell and Kevin Hart, executive vice president and CTO of Cox Communications and chairman of the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo Program Committee, as well as two thought-leadership panels. Pat Esser, president of Cox Communications, will moderate a C-Suite panel featuring Dave Watson, executive vice president and CEO of Comcast, and Bob Stanzione, chairman and CEO of ARRIS; and John Schanz, chief network officer and executive vice president of Comcast, will moderate a network operations panel featuring: Yvette Kanouff, executive vice president, corporate engineering and technology, Cablevision Systems Corporation; Guy McCormick, vice president, engineering, Cox Communications; Matthew Stanek, senior vice president of core, regional, metro and network operations, Time Warner Cable; and Marwan Fawaz, partner with Sarepta Advisors.
