The National Film and Video Foundation to position SA film industry at the Toronto International Film Festival

The National Film and Video Foundation, an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture is embarking on a trip to attend the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Taking place from the 10th until the 20th of September, Toronto International Film Festival is the leading public film festival in the world, bringing the power of film to life each September, since 1976.

Since 2000, South African film industry has consistently participated in major international film festivals around the world. The country's participation encompasses the screening of South African films, strategic meetings with potential partners and the SA Consulate- General. The NFVF has once again partnered with the Film Market Access in Toronto (FMA), supporting five (5) students / emerging filmmakers and three (3) Tier 2 producers to participate in the Toronto Program taking place during the festival. The eight (8) also have an opportunity to gain industry knowledge by attending panel discussions, screenings and receptions.

The regular, coordinated participation at the festival continue to raise the profile of local film content. Four (4) South African films have been selected to screen at TIFF this year, the films are: Oliver Hermanus' Endless River, Charlie Vundla's Cuckold, Zamo Mkhwanazi's The Call and Jihan El-Tahri's Nasser. To celebrate the SA selection in the highly popular festival which everyone who is in the film industry clamour to attend, the NFVF in partnership with the South African Consulate-General and Blue Ice Pictures will host a networking event on the 14th of September.

The NFVF on a constant basis provides funding to filmmakers to attend screenings of their work at festivals and to pitch projects with the aim of gaining financing to advance their projects. To ensure that local filmmakers are empowered to attend the festival, the NFVF has funded 10 filmmakers including filmmakers attending the Film Market Access program.

South Africa has an existing co-production treaty with Canada, which was signed in 1997. This official trip will also assist in strengthening relations between local and Canadian filmmakers, mapping the way forward to future co-productions that would benefit both the countries.
