South African NGO produces coming-of-age series for SABC1 --

Community Media Trust (CMT), a South African NGO that creates educational productions and documentaries, is launching Amaza, a new youth series, which will air on SABC1 on Monday 3 February at 20h30.

The filming of the series took a developmental approach by employing first-time drama writers, providing mentorship for staff and inviting scholars and students for regular set visits.

Directors Lucilla Blankenburg and Laddie Bosch, who filmed under the guidance of Tim Spring, said that there was a real feeling of camaraderie among everyone involved with the production. Amaza was greatly supported and guided by SABC Commissioning Editor, Khulile Nxumalo and an amazing cast and crew made it happen on set with lots of laughter, said Blankenburg.

Amaza, meaning waves , is set in a street in Muizenberg, Cape Town and follows the lives of four main characters whom experience the challenges of growing up, learn to deal with family responsibility, try to follow their dreams and have to face realities while in their early twenties.

The main characters are Bongani Mapang, portrayed by Siyabonga Mayola; Ayesha Ibrahim played by Shamilla Miller; Thembi Kamva played by Zikhona Mda and Jaco du Toit portrayed by Sean-Marco Vorster.

Actor Vorster commented: I think it s a uniquely written narrative, with strong binaries and relevant themes. The writers did a great job by interlinking so many different cultures under one narrative umbrella. The story brings something new in every episode, with characters and exciting events.

Blankenburg feels confident about CMT s ability to execute this large-scale production and has already started considering possible plots for the second series.

The series premieres on SABC 1 on Monday 3 February at 20h30.
