IABM Supports its Members and BBC Academy as UK Transitions to File-Based Programme Delivery

The IABM showed support for the UK's upcoming transition to file-based programme delivery by joining forces with the BBC Academy, to host an exclusive preview event for its members and key representatives from across the broadcasting industry.

The premier IABM special technology event was held at IBM's head office in London last month and was chaired by John Ive, IABM's director of business development & technology.

John Ive says: The UK is the first nation to announce the move towards file-based delivery of programmes and the DPP's support in helping that to happen has been invaluable. In addition, the positive collaboration between the technology supply industry, the end users and the broadcasters and programmes makers has been instrumental to its success.

This is a landmark year for the industry as the delivery landscape is set to change forever. We are delighted to be able to support our members and other key players involved in this transition, and by hosting events like this will ensure they stay as well informed as possible.

At the special technology event, a number of keynote presentations were delivered by Andy Quested, head of HD & UHD, BBC; Rowan de Pomerai, Senior Technical Manager, ITV Studios; and Taig McNab, Technical Manager, 3sixytmedia. The insightful presentations were followed by a series of practical demonstrations looking at the workflow of file-based delivery and quality control presented by independent specialists, as well as an interactive panel discussion with the audience.

Andy Quested, head of HD & UHD, BBC says: This event provided the perfect platform to discuss file-based delivery with people in the industry who are responsible for making the devices for broadcasters. It was an ideal opportunity to talk about how they work and find out the general views on the standards, as well as provide attendees with a demonstration to illustrate exactly how it's going to work in practice.

3sixtymedia has been making use of file-based programme delivery to various broadcasters since 2012. Taig McNab, Technical Manager, 3sixytmedia says: We have delivered files for all the major broadcasters in the UK and have gained a wealth of knowledge and practical experience in this area. This has enabled us to tailor our workflow processes to meet each individual broadcaster's requirements.

The UK is already the world leader in providing a single unified delivery standard and, from October 1 2014, ITV, BBC and Channel 4, amongst others, will be transitioning to a file-based programme delivery method. The revolutionary move from video tape to file-based delivery is one of the biggest changes in television since the introduction of colour.

The DPP is a not-for-profit taskforce led by the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, with representation from Sky, Channel 5, S4/C, UKTV and BT Sport. The main aim of the taskforce is to help speed the transition to full digital production and distribution in television, in a move that will see a complete end to tape-based delivery.

Further events by the BBC Academy are planned for the coming weeks. The demonstrations and discussion are set to take place throughout the summer in locations including Salford, Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff and London.
