KDDI, DNI Develop 3.2-terabit Packet Router Using OSS for 5G-friendly Transmission

KDDI CORPORATION (Headquarters: Chiyoda, Tokyo, President: Makoto Takahashi) and Delta Networks, Inc. (Headquarters: Taipei, Taiwan, Chairman: Victor Cheng, DNI) announce that they have succeeded in developing a router that uses open-source software (OSS) and can transmit data packets of up to 3.2 terabits.

As a constituent element of the IP networks that support next-generation 5G telecommunication systems, routers are being required to handle ever-larger volumes of data. KDDI is responding with efforts to improve expandability in terms of electric power, space, cost, user interface and other specifications.

In the field of OSS, meanwhile, the Open Compute Project (OCP) is a community that aims to bring open sourcing to hardware specifications. OCP has been working to make open-sourced switching devices for data centers available in order to conserve space and electric power while enabling multipurpose use. But one challenging issue has been the processing that enables data transmitted in packets between OS and hardware to be reflected.

In recent years, open APIs for hardware control have been released, making it possible to have data transmitted by packet reflected in hardware. KDDI and DNI have developed hardware-based packet transmission processing that uses OSS to enable hardware packet transmission data to be kept on the hardware. This makes it possible to increase energy conservation and cost effectiveness while also maximizing packet transmission capacity.

The router developed by KDDI and DNI enables information sharing through the use of packet transmission control software that uses OSS and open API on hardware conforming to OCP standards. This can be expected to bring greater utility in terms of cost, user interface and operation.

KDDI will continue to expand the functionality of the newly developed router as we validate its adoption for use in commercial networks. Through our efforts contributing to the OSS community, we will also contribute to the realization of high-capacity, high-quality IP networks.
