Looking Back: Movies In eaters the Last Time Justin Timberlake Released An Album

On the occasion of 20/20 blasting out of every internet-connected device today, were taking a look at what the movie landscape looked like the last time Justin released an album, six and a half long years ago.

The #1 Movie in America:

The Covenant, Renny Harlins movie about four male model types in New England who turn out to be witches. Taylor Kitsch, Chace Crawford, and Sebastian Stan, all before they got famous. This managed to take the #1 slot at the box-office with barely more than $8 million, which only makes me think that Beautiful Creatures, a far superior movie about witches starring actors like Aiden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert who will totally be more famous than they are in six years, could have avoided looking like a total bomb if it only premiered in September.

In Ben Affleck News:

Hollywoodland debuted at #2 that week, featuring Ben Affleck with an against-type Very Serious Performance as former TV Superman George Reeves. This was supposed to be Afflecks big return to acting after the unfortunate run of Gigli, Paycheck, Surviving Christmas, and Jersey Girls. The Golden Globes gave him a Best Supporting Actor nomination, but that was about it, and the next year, he went and made Gone Baby Gone and officially entered his Director Phase, and look how well that turned out.

In Step Up News:

Who knew back in 2006 that the modest success of a little dance movie called Step Up would eventually spawn the most delightful movie franchise currently in existence, not to mention the white-hot career of one Channing Tatum?

Summer Success Stories:

While Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest was rounding out its profile as the years eventual #1 film, a few more interesting stories lurked in theaters. Little Miss Sunshine was continuing to roll out, capturing audiences and inching its way to an eventual Best Picture nomination. Talladega Nights was holding strong in the Top 10.

About to Open:

The Rock -- still known as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson back in 06, before fully retreating to his Christian name -- would open the following weekend at #1 with Gridiron Gang. Now, hes in the middle of opening four movies in the span of three months, with Snitch, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Pain & Gain, and Fast and Furious 6.
