Cape Town dams: Latest water levels for Monday 11 March

The rainfall has been good for the Cape Town dams this week, but it hasn't been enough to arrest the decline at the facilities. Water levels were down a further 1.13%, leaving the reserves at 51.63% at the beginning of the week.

The dams that serve the rest of the Western Cape also continued to lose water, with the combined figure standing at 39.83% full. However, there are some reasons to be cheerful: The barrage of rain that hit the Cape on Sunday hasn't been accounted for, and there are more downpours scheduled for Monday.

Furthermore, the water levels for both the Mother City and the province dropped by a smaller-than-average amount. With more unsettled weather yet to come, next week could see the numbers move in the opposite direction.

Theewaterskloof dam - 39.9% (10.6% full in March 2018).

Vo lvlei dam - 63.7% (15.3% full in March 2018).

Bergriver Dam 72.7% (47.9% full in March 2018).

Clanwilliam Dam 30.3% (2018: 6.9% full in March 2018).

The winter forecast for the Western Cape Anton Bredell is the minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape. He revealed that his department is very optimistic that the region is on course for a wet, rainy winter season. In fact, he even advised municipalities to prepare for the possibility of multiple floods:

We hope to see much more rainfall over the coming months for our dams, rivers and groundwater levels to recover from the devastating drought we have been battling over the past four years. It is not yet certain how much rain we will get at this moment.

However, being proactive can go a long way to alleviating challenges posed by lots of rain. Municipalities should be clearing out the stormwater drains and ensuring that water runoff can happen easily and without blockages that could cause problems. The same advice is relevant to communities.
