Creative Futures event to connect UK and SA creatives --

The British Council Connect ZA initiative is aimed at creating partnerships between creative communities in the UK and South Africa through a series of arts projects. The campaign makes use of digital platforms to build networks between emerging creatives, aged 18 to 35, in music, film, visual art and design.

From 10 to 12 September, British Council Connect ZA in association with Live SA and the Fakugesi Digital Africa Festival, will bring together sixteen leading creative innovators and entrepreneurs from across South Africa, the rest of Africa and the UK for Creative Futures an event which allows for the experiential exchange of knowledge, practice and creativity. The gathering will take place in various venues and spaces around Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Tom Porter, British Council Connect ZA head of arts says, Over the past 12 months our Connect ZA initiative has created greater connections and networks between UK creatives and their contemporaries in South Africa, and we expect Creative Futures will continue this.

The innovators and entrepreneurs selected to take part in Creative Futures include:

Theatre-maker Lindiwe Matshikiza (SA)

Fashion designer and visual artist Jamal Nxedlana (SA)

Food Jams creator Jade de Waal (SA)

DJ Spoko (SA)

Creative Nestlings co-founder Dillion Phiri (SA)

Researcher and programmer Job King Ori Maina (SA)

Visual artist Jody Paulsen (SA)

Keleketla! Library co-founder Malose Malahlela (SA)

Fashion entrepreneur Eseoghene Odiete (Nigera)

Artist and filmmaker Amirah Tajdin (Kenya)

Accra[dot]Alt co-founder Sionne Neely (Ghana)

Photographer Davina Jogi (Zimbabwe)

Animator Nqobizitha Mlilo (Zimbabwe)

Actress and partnership marketing manager Libby Curley (UK)

Co-founder of music label Somethinksounds Kazim Kazim Kazim (UK)

Artist Gareth Owen Lloyd (UK)

The creatives will take part in industry and open public events including exchanges, collaborations, talks, performances and a live music party. Some of the featured events are:

A visual tour of Johannesburg for professional photographers and filmmakers led by Future Sounds of Mzansi filmmaker Lebogang Rasethaba

A series of free public talks including the Business of Fashion, Music Promotion and Business in the Digital Age

Tetrafix, a closing party in collaboration with British Council Connect ZA, Unyazi Electronic Music Festival, A MAZE Festival and Black Cube Sessions.
