Triveni Digital CSO Richard Chernock Appointed

Chairman of ATSC Technology Group 3

PRINCETON, N.J. - January 13, 2014 Triveni Digital today announced that its chief science officer, Dr. Richard Chernock, has been appointed as the new chairman of the ATSC Technology Group 3 (TG3). Chernock replaces Jim Kutzner of PBS, who announced his retirement effective Feb. 1. In his new role, Chernock will oversee the development of future digital TV standards, including ATSC 3.0.

The ATSC TG3 develops voluntary technical Standards and Recommended Practices for the next-generation digital terrestrial television broadcast system. ATSC 3.0 is likely to be incompatible with current broadcast systems and therefore must provide improvements in performance, functionality and efficiency significant enough to warrant implementation of a non-backwards-compatible system. Interoperability with production systems and non-broadcast distribution systems will be an important consideration during the development of the new standard.

Thanks to the creation of new digital TV standards, television is becoming a more personalized, engaging, and multiscreen experience, said Ralph Bachofen, vice president of sales and head of marketing at Triveni Digital. To ensure that the future of television continues on that path, the ATSC TG3 needed to elect a new chairman who is knowledgeable, experienced, and a natural-born leader. Richard has all of those attributes, and more, making him qualified to lead this important directive.

As CSO at Triveni Digital, Chernock develops strategic directions for monitoring, content distribution, and metadata management for emerging digital television systems and infrastructures. Prior to joining Triveni Digital, he was a Research Staff Member at IBM Research, investigating digital broadcast technologies.

Chernock is active in many of the ATSC, Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), and Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers committees, particularly in the areas of mobile digital TV, monitoring, metadata, and data broadcast. He was the chairman of the ATSC Technology Standards Group (TG1) from 2011-2013, and chairs the Non-Real-Time Services activities within ATSC. He is also the Distinguished Lecturer Chair for IEEE Broadcast Technology Society. He has a Doctor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the field of nuclear materials engineering.
