MTV s Ztrope Show Package

MTV's EMA 2012 show package, Zoetrop, exudes powerful creative energy. Sehsucht studios used CINEMA 4D to create the spot!

Berlin, November 12, 2012 Berlin, Germay-based Sehsucht studios produced teasers for MTV's 19th annual European Music Awards (EMA www.uk.mtvema.com) show, which took place on November 11, 2012 in the historic Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany.

The 20-second teaser, which was used as a basis for shorter variations, revolves around a large Zoetrop a cylindrical device, whose use dates back to 180 B.C., with holes around its side through which a sequence of images can be viewed which, when the cylinder is rotated, give the impression of being animated. Sehsucht brings this ancient technique to the present for MTV's EMA teaser. The animations that appear in the multi-level Zoetrope tell the timeless story of an underdog whose music makes him a star. Each if the Zoetropes levels depict different stages of the artist's career and culminate in his being honored at the MTV European Music Awards.

Using various characters, the timeless rags-to-riches story is told: an underground band uses social media and its fans to forge its way amongst the stars and onto the red carpet sweeping the EMA prizes!

The spot's technical realization and more than a dozen different versions posed a unique challenge for Sehsucht and inspired them to find unorthodox solutions: The Maxwell renderer was used to create a photorealistic look. 3D was used very early in the character design stage. Sculptis was used to design the characters, which were then exported to CINEMA 4D where they were animated. This presented Sehsucht with their next challenge: the entire Zoetrope was modeled using 100% 3D geometry no tricks or shortcuts. Each animation consisted of 24 individual models, which had to give the visual impression of looping when the Zoetrope was spun.
