Partnership intended to enable service providers and content owners to quickly and economically launch OTT services
SHERMAN OAKS, Calif., and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - April 02, 2014 - Vubiquity, the largest global provider of multiplatform video services, and Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimising and securing online content and business applications, today announced a partnership designed to help network service providers or content owners efficiently and cost-effectively launch over-the-top (OTT) video services. The content-as-a-service offering combines Vubiquitys AnyVU Cloud and the Akamai Intelligent Platform to offer a robust licensed content library along with cloud-based content workflows, storage and delivery at a global scale.
AnyVU Cloud will enable superior speed and scale, allowing for service levels that could not be achieved independently. Providing a highly agile framework from which to test new products, programming services that previously took many months to go-to-market can be launched in weeks. These service enhancements and efficiencies are enabled by storage optimizations through multi-tenant library management, real-time access to deep content catalogs, business rule engines, and API access to new service modules that will be continuously added. AnyVU Cloud will support Vubiquitys current roster of service provider and content provider customers as well as new OTT and OVP platforms. AnyVU Cloud will house licensed transactional, electronic sell-through - including digital locker fulfillment - and subscription Video on Demand content, as well as free-on-demand TV and live linear feeds.
As part of the new content-as-a-service offering, Akamais Media & Delivery Solutions, including cloud storage and efficient high-speed content delivery network (CDN), are designed to help ensure high-quality video delivery and superior user experiences across networks and devices. Further, the content-as-a-service offering can also be deployed using Akamais Aura licensed or managed CDN solutions to provide network operators an on-net and off-net OTT solution to help manage traffic, reduce network costs, and engage their subscribers with compelling new video services.
Together, the companies expect to deliver content directly to consumer devices on behalf of their joint service provider customers in over 90 countries.
Akamai and Vubiquity are responding to growing demand from network service providers and content owners for new strategies and platforms upon which to leverage premium-quality video offerings, said Bill Wheaton, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Media Division at Akamai. Were leveraging Vubiquitys expertise in the acquisition, management and processing of content with the unparalleled scale and reach of Akamais media delivery and network services to offer a combined content, technology and network platform that supports different types of online video business models.
AnyVU Cloud was a natural evolution for Vubiquity which supports more than 700 customers on a global scale. Coupled with Akamais globally deployed network that carries up to 30 percent of the worlds web traffic at any time, we are providing a platform of unparalleled reach, noted Vubiquitys CEO Darcy Antonellis. Weve architected a highly scalable platform that supports the growing needs for deep library content, with very flexible integration paths to enable new consumer-facing product and service offers. The modularity of the platform means clients can pick and choose services from content licensing to delivery, marketing and data analytics, to fill existing gaps and experiment more rapidly with new products to support growth.
Akamai is showcasing its full range of digital media solutions, including cloud-based storage, processing, analytics and delivery services at the 2014 NAB Show, booth SL4525, in Las Vegas, April 7-10. Demonstrations will show how live and on-demand online video content, including 4K/UHD, can be delivered at the quality and scale necessary to meet increasing consumer demands and expectations.
