From Childhood Cancer Night to On-Field Game Day Job: Baker Comes Full Circle

Coming to work at the Bulls was a full-circle moment for DBBC Game Day Marketing & Promotions Assistant Bo Baker. In 2009 at 6 years old, Baker attended a Strike Out Childhood Cancer Night. He was in the midst of his own battle with the disease at the time. Now he is cancer-free, wrapping up his freshman year in college and working at his dream job.

In his summer job at the ballpark at the DBAP, Baker helps out with games on the field. He's one of the enthusiastic staffers you see doing the YMCA on the dugout!

Baker was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor, pediatric kidney cancer on February 14, 2009. He had radiation and chemo treatments through September of that year. At the time his mom, Amy Baker, worked for Wolfpack Sports Marketing, which was a division of Capitol Broadcasting.

Bo has now been cancer free for almost 14 years, she happily reported. There have been challenges along the way but he has always overcome them and not allowed it to keep him from achieving his goals.

Baker attended that Childhood Cancer Awareness Night in August 2009, as he approached the end of treatments. It was a special night as he got to go on the field with the players for the National Anthem and hang out with Wool E. Bull.

Fast forward and now Baker is a student in the Poole College of Management at NC State.

When he was home at Thanksgiving, he told me his dream job would be to work in the MLB, explained Amy Baker. I said, That's a dream that can be reality! You just have to start somewhere.' He immediately went to the CBC website and filled out an application to work for the Bulls .I'm proud to see him following his dreams. Every day I get to see him live a normal life is a blessing to me. Seeing the pictures of him on the field working, really brought everything full circle. CBC has always been so supportive of our family and I'm happy Bo gets to experience working for a great company.

Capitol Broadcasting is excited to have Bo Baker on the Bulls game day staff team.

It's exciting to work for the Durham Bulls because I am interested in a career in baseball, he said. I felt like this would be a great opportunity to gain experience with the most well-known minor league baseball team in the country. I'm already learning a lot and feel so fortunate to learn and grow this summer through this job.
