Techies might enjoy bits and bytes but businesses need services and solutions not complexities and challenges

One great thing about cloud is that in general the customer doesn't need to manage their data. Essentially all the management of the data is done for you. You put data in. You take data out. So why then can't storage systems on-premises offer that ease of use, scale and data management?

Most organisations don't want to employ storage experts - they just want a solution that works. Can cloud-like ease of use be brought on-premises?

That said, Cloud doesn't do everything automatically. It doesn't audit, doesn't extract and make video metadata searchable and probably doesn't link with a great many of your favourite media tools. The nirvana is the integrated solution that you just use. A system that looks after your assets for you in a seamlessly integrated solution stack, an integrated hybrid solution that can move assets between multiple tiers and across the globe as they are required.

The Predictions:

Storage is dead. It is the Machine Code of yester year - people need usable products and services not nuts and bolts. Storage will become an increasingly antiquated term.

Digital Content Governance will grow; we love the term DCG but whatever the term the wider world adopts it will be based around those concepts.

2020's DCG systems will be hybrid and will cover increasing amounts of the workflow on premises and off premises.

By 2020, the prediction is that we will look back at the silos of filesystems we often use today and wonder why on earth we ever wanted to do things that way. By 2020 Digital Content Governance (DCG) will be the norm - letting automated systems provide a full solution rather than problems.
