Toshiba Publishes English Edition of Environmental Report 2013 Company introduces a new concept of environmental management T-Compass

Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) today announced publication of the English edition of the Toshiba Group Environmental Report 2013. The report includes coverage of environmental efforts in manufacturing processes, environmentally conscious products, environmental technology, and T-Compass, the new concept of environmental management that Toshiba Group has introduced in this fiscal year.
In T-Compass, the letters of the four cardinal points north, south, east and west represent environmental issues Toshiba Group is addressing: Natural resources (Minimizing the amount of natural resources consumed) ; Substances (Minimizing the risks involved in chemical substances) ; Energy (Responding to climate change and energy issues) ; and Water (Minimizing the amount of water resources consumed) . By presenting its environmental contributions in concrete terms in the four major domains, Toshiba Group will explain simply about its activities to stakeholders inside and outside the Group. The ultimate objective is to secure a position as one of the world's foremost eco-companies by strategically addressing new global trends, including the Scope3 Standard and environmental footprints, and to advance environmental management to new levels.
Environmental Report 2013 covers activities in FY2012, among them the sales figure of Excellent ECPs 1, greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain, conservation of biodiversity and Toshiba Group Global Environmental Action by the 200,000 employees around the world. The report has the following sections:
1. Visions and Strategies This section includes a message from the CEO; a report on progress made under the Fifth Environmental Action Plan which will contribute to the realization of Environmental Vision 2050, and measures to promote smart communities. A special feature in this section covers conservation of biodiversity.
2. Expansion of ECPs Excellent ECPs bring benefits to the consumer and the environment, and in this section of the report looks at how Toshiba Group is expanding their creation, and at the products that won certification as Excellent ECP in FY2012. The reviews focus on efforts to minimize the environmental impact of products throughout their entire lifecycles; product eco-efficiency; and mitigation of climate change through low-carbon energy supply technologies.
3. High-efficiency Manufacturing Toshiba's goal in manufacturing is to achieve world's lowest level of environmental impacts in its production processes. Measures include mitigation of climate change, efficient use of resources, management of chemicals, responding to environmental risks, and recycling end-of-life products. This section also introduces visible GHG emissions in the supply chain for all categories in line with the Scope 3 standard and the process for making energy-saving diagnoses at production sites.
4. Compliance and Management Toshiba Group aims to be the top environmentally conscious company in the world and this section looks at the basic activities including the Group's environmental management structure, environmental education to develop human resource, environmental audits and environmental accounting.
5. Reputation This year marked the start of Toshiba Group Global Environmental Action, and this section explains how 200,000 Toshiba Group employees worldwide are encouraged to participate in a unified environmental campaign. This section also includes approaches for mutual understanding with stakeholders and evaluation by external parties.
6. Advancing to the Next Stage With T-Compass, Toshiba Group is taking its environmental management concept to a new level, and supporting its goal of becoming one of the world's foremost eco-companies. This section explains how.
