Nokia modernizes State of Vermont Department of Public Safety communications network for first responders
Upgraded statewide microwave network supports more modern applications for public safety communications
Nokia's Wavence portfolio allows for higher capacity with maximized performance and reliability
19 October 2021
Dallas, Texas - Nokia today announced it has upgraded the State of Vermont Department of Public Safety (DPS) microwave communications network which supports the mission-critical communication needs for several state agencies. The fully implemented microwave solution provides the state with increased speeds, more flexibility and resiliency and higher bandwidth to support modern communications applications, such as video, for its statewide public safety network.
The State of Vermont DPS is responsible for promoting the detection and prevention of crime, participating in searches for lost and missing persons, and assisting in cases of statewide or local disasters or emergencies. All divisions in the department - the Vermont State Police, Vermont Emergency Management, Vermont Crime Information Center, Radio Technology Services, Vermont Forensics Lab and the Division of Fire Safety - are supported by Nokia's microwave radio network.
The State of Vermont has replaced its legacy microwave radios with Nokia's Wavence microwave packet radio and IP routing families. This network upgrade enables the State of Vermont to continue providing highly reliable and secure connectivity for its public safety communications needs today, while enhancing the network for higher capacity and improved availability with a platform that will take it well into the future.
Terry M. LaValley, Director Radio Technology Services, State of Vermont DPS, said: The safety of our workers and the people of Vermont are our first priority. In upgrading our public safety communications network, we're ensuring our teams can stay connected and communicating when it counts most. Nokia has demonstrated the quality of its microwave radio products and excellent support over these many years, and they are our trusted partner for our public safety network.
Matt Young, Head of Enterprise - North America, Nokia, said: Nokia takes seriously our role in supporting the DPS First Responders with their responsibility to protect the citizens of Vermont. We have a long-standing partnership with the State of Vermont and this upgrade to our microwave radio network will help keep first responders connected in any mission-critical situation.
Nokia's Wavence portfolio incorporate features specifically designed to address the unique needs of the State of Vermont providing support for its TDM traffic while also providing a flexible and expandable backhaul network for new IP/MPLS based applications. The State chose the Wavence Microwave Service Switch (MSS) due to the advanced Carrier Ethernet networking, aggregation and demarcation functions and the Wavence Microwave Packet Transceiver (MPT- HLC) which offers high system gain permitting the use of smaller antennas and reduced tower loading. The Wavence solutons enable the State of Vermont to expand its network to support the capacity requirements of a new IP-based architecture while also increasing reliabilty and availabilty of the network without impacting existing applications.
The solution to the State also includes Nokia's 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR) delivering transport services faster with dynamic assurance, maximum performance and high reliability for first reponsders.
Nokia has deployed over 1,500 mission-critical networks with leading customers in the transport, energy, large enterprise, manufacturing, webscale and public sector segments around the globe. Leading enterprises across industries are leveraging Nokia's decades of experience building some of the biggest and most advanced IP, optical, and wireless networks on the planet. The Nokia Bell Labs Future X for industries architecture provides a framework for enterprises to accelerate their digitalization and automation journey to Industry 4.0.
