Tricks for Catching Content with the Mad Hueys

The Mad Hueys are a new-age triple threat. They surf, they slay it at fishing and they definitely know how to have a good time. But even more than that, they kill it at capturing footage from all the above. A few minutes spent on their various social media handles, and you'll have some serious FOMO.

The GoPro team couldn't help but swoon over their content, too, which is why we recently partnered up with the crew to become the official camera of all things Huey. Then, we got permission from Captain Blackbeard to board his vessel and learn a thing or two about how they use a GoPro.

Use the boat to your advantage.

An outboard motor makes charging deeper seas easy, but more importantly, it doubles as the perfect mounting station. Use an adhesive mount to attach a GoPro to the top, and you have the freedom to swivel from port to starboard depending on where the action is happening.

Practice those angles.

Use the bow as a second mounting location. This way you have different POVs so you'll never miss the catch of the day. It's all about making sure you get the perfect shot when you catch a good fish, Blackbeard says. If you miss it, or it's a bad shot, you're not going to want to share.

Don't miss the shot.

We're going to say it again-don't miss the shot. This is exactly why The Hueys prefer GoPros. You can just fix it on your boat and press record as you fight that fish, and you don't have to worry about it. Long story short, keep those camera rolling because if you don't get any footie, chances are no one will believe you caught the big one.

Use a few camera options.

Blackbeard prefers a combo of the HERO4 Black and HERO Session. The Session can be mounted in unique places without interfering (on a submerged line, near the reel or even in a frothy beer) and is best dialed in at 1080p60. Whereas the Black can capture the highest quality video at up to 4K resolution.

Think about the story.

Fishing is all about a good story-a 20-pounder can become a record-breaking catch with the right spin. The same goes for the content you are capturing on a GoPro, It's 90 percent the vision.

Go into the fishing trip, surf sesh, etc., knowing that you're telling a story with a beginning, middle and end. Grabbing a shot of the boat engine firing up or the crew dropping their first lines are a great way to start a video. Then, end with a classic high five or by plunging a camera into the water.

Shooting for likes is actually OK.

If you're not on track for cutting a banger edit, but you're still looking for bragging rights about having the most epic day out on the water, consider the medium. Hone in on capturing a winning photo. Videos are great, but still photos get more traction, is Blackbeard's best advice.
