GoPro Surf Athlete Lakey Peterson Wins J-Bay WSL Comp

GoPro surf athlete Lakey Peterson put on an incredible showing at the 2023 Corona Open J-Bay in South Africa this week, ultimately earning her a well-deserved first place title!

Lakey worked her way through heats facing Caitlin Simmers, Caroline Marks, Tyler Wright and eventually landed in the finals with Molly Picklum. The peeling rights of Supertubes proved to be the perfect playing field for Lakey's powerful frontside turns, and her performance in the finals showcased how she's both physically and mentally stronger than ever.

This was Lakey's fifth CT Event win ever and first CT win since 2019, made all the sweeter by the training she's been putting in after suffering a lower back injury in 2021. You can check out-and try!-some of her workouts on her YouTube channel.

The win landed Lakey just outside the Final 5 Cutoff at No. 6 going into the final stop of the tour at the Outerknown Tahiti Pro on Aug. 11.

Lakey was quoted by the WSL about the win, saying: This is my favorite event on the calendar, its just special. Im dedicating this to my sister-in-law who we lost this time of year last year so theres a lot of emotions, its really cool. We all work so hard and were so competitive but its really special when your peers want to celebrate you and they show up for you, its a pretty cool community and I dont know many other sports like that.
