Harris Corporation Demonstrates Public Safety LTE for New Orleans Public Safety Officers During The Big Game Highlights:
New Orleans public safety officials use Harris products to view real-time streaming video.
Solution demonstrates benefits of public safety LTE applications.
Multi-vendor solution includes Cisco and Nokia Siemens Networks.
MELBOURNE, FL/NEW ORLEANS February 6, 2013 While millions of fans were watching the annual professional football championship game being played nearby, New Orleans emergency managers for the very first time were viewing real-time video from individuals in the field over a next generation wireless broadband network. The first responders are taking part in a Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) pilot program to showcase new 700 MHz Band 14 LTE capabilities. The six-month demonstration began on February 3, when first responders first experienced LTE and broadband applications over a dedicated network. Typically, it can take hours or days after an event for first responders to see video from the field, limiting its usability. During the February 3rd test, participants in the City of New Orleans Emergency Operations Center where multiple agencies coordinate response and recovery during emergency incidents accessed live, streaming video from individuals in the field using a Harris ruggedized tablet. The tablet, designed for operation on LTE networks, delivers mission-critical information in real-time for instant communication and coordination. The pilot program allows the City of New Orleans to test a series of mission-specific, public safety LTE devices and applications. Experience with the Harris pilot program will help city public safety officials better design their operations to take full advantage of next generation wireless broadband technology. The program was granted a Special Temporary Authority (STA) to operate in the 700 MHz Band 14 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with consent from FirstNet. The pilot network combines Harris experience in advanced, mission-critical communications with IT and LTE network design expertise from Cisco and Nokia Siemens Networks. The resulting network delivers a total system that allows first responders to experience the capabilities of actionable data in the field. Throughout the six-month pilot, Harris, Cisco and Nokia Siemens Networks will work with the City of New Orleans to demonstrate additional public safety-centric applications and devices on the network system. Among our nations first responders, there is great curiosity about blending todays voice communications with future broadband capabilities in what has been called convergence. Harris and our program partners are pleased to help first responders experience this next generation technology and public safety grade devices and applications in a multi-vendor environment, said Chuck Shaughnessy, vice president, LTE Business, Harris Public Safety and Professional Communications. Harris devices and applications for LTE include the recently-introduced InTouch handheld device, BeOnPush-to-Talk application and MBC-100 vehicular modems. Cisco, a worldwide leader in IT, is supplying the local Evolved Packet Core (EPC) as part of the Harris LTE network pilot. Nokia Siemens Networks, a global leader in LTE technology, is providing eNodeB base stations. The Cisco Evolved Packet Core of the public safety pilot network gives New Orleans law enforcement the unique ability to deliver immediate information in a test environment to help officers see how real-time data could improve mission critical communication during a real response, said Paul Mankiewich, chief technology officer, Mobile Internet Technology Group, Cisco. Cisco is committed to the six-month pilot to bring more applications and capabilities to the intelligent network platform. Nokia Siemens Networks is pleased to be a key part of the Harris team that is putting the capabilities of LTE in the hands of Public Safety officers during such high profile events as Sundays big game and Mardi Gras, said Bob Fennelly, head of Government and Public Safety, Nokia Siemens Networks. The experiences and input from these officers will be very helpful in executing the difficult tasks of designing and rolling out the upcoming FirstNet national broadband network. The New Orleans pilot program follows the first nationwide public safety LTE demonstration, which was conducted by Harris in July 2012 and connected pilot programs in Las Vegas; Miami; Rochester, N.Y.; and Chelmsford, Mass., to show participants real-world use of streaming video, voice, mapping, and presence for mission-critical operations in a national scenario.
