Lanc sur le march il y a 4 ans, le syst me de stabilisation cam ra ARRI TRINITY est de plus en plus utilis sur les longs m trages, t l films, publicit s et d fil s de mode. Les trois premiers op rateurs TRINITY en France nous expliquent les apports la narration de cet outil unique en son genre.

Pour expliquer le TRINITY mes interlocuteurs, je dis quil sagit dun petit bras de grue stabilis que lon porterait sur soi - Benjamin Groussain
Op rateur Steadicam depuis 2007 et TRINITY depuis 2018, Benjamin Groussain a acquis une solide exp rience dans le syst me de stabilisation cam ra con u par ARRI. Il l'utilise aussi bien sur des longs m trages que des s ries tv. Nous avons beaucoup de demandes de TRINITY pour les tournages, mais, comme nous ne sommes pas assez nombreux sur le march , nous ne pouvons pas tout accepter , pr cise Benjamin Groussain. Quand des op rateurs mappellent pour savoir sils doivent investir dans la machine, je leur dis : fonce . Cest une machine complexe pratiquer au d but, mais une fois quon la en main, elle offre tellement de possibilit s. Elle permet dexplorer de nouvelles mani res de raconter les histoires .
Pour expliquer le TRINITY mes interlocuteurs, je dis quil sagit dun petit bras de grue stabilis que lon porterait sur soi , indique Benjamin Groussain. Je peux commencer cadrer tr s bas, 15cm du sol, et remonter dans un m me mouvement pour finir en top shot 2,30m. Avec cette machine, je peux avoir plus d'amplitude de hauteur dans un m me plan quavec une dolly et ensuite panoter en plong e. Sur le nouveau film de Laurent Tirard, Juste Ciel , le chef op rateur Eric Blanckaert a eu envie dutiliser le TRINITY quil avait d couvert avec moi sur un clip vid o. Habituellement, il travaille au gimbal, mais comme il y avait beaucoup de plans embarqu s sur des v hicules, il cherchait un outil tr s polyvalent qui permette plus d'options de hauteur avec moins d'encombrement, alli une libert de d placement. Avec le bras articul du TRINITY, jai tourn des plans de personnages v lo o je passais de leurs pieds leur visage dans un m me mouvement, alors que j tais tract sur un quad avec ma machine. Comme le TRINITY stabilise lhorizontale lectroniquement, je navais pas me pr occuper de la bulle, contrairement un Steadicam. J tais s r que mon horizon ne bougerait jamais, malgr les acc l rations et les vibrations de la route .

Au-del des plans tr s sp cifiques que permettent le TRINITY, Benjamin Groussain insiste sur lapport de la machine la mise en sc ne : On parle beaucoup du passage low mode/high mode avec le TRINITY, mais si lon fait deux plans comme ceux-l dans un film, cest le maximum. La machine a plein dautres possibilit s, notamment quand le bras est utilis lhorizontale. Je peux rentrer dans une voiture et sortir en suivant le personnage. Avec le joystick, je peux piquer, d piquer, aller chercher des d tails. Cest un vrai r gal. Je pense notamment une publicit Balmain que jai faite avec le directeur de la photo Kanam Onoyama. Javan ais dans un long couloir, puis je passais lhorizontale sur une table pour finir en plan serr sur le visage de Cara Delevingne en contre-plong e. Aucune machine naurait pu faire a, vue la configuration des lieux. Ce plan est n dune improvisation. C tait de la cr ation pure sur le plateau .

Si le TRINITY ouvre plein de nouvelles possibilit s, il ne peut pas tout faire , nuance cependant Benjamin Groussain. Parfois, on mappelle pour des plans avec des changements tr s rapides de cadre, mais la machine a une certaine inertie dont il faut tenir compte. M me chose dans une pi ce trop exig e. Il faut de la place pour manipuler le bras articul . En fait, le TRINITY est un outil suppl mentaire dans la palette des r alisateurs et des chefs op rateurs, aux c t s des grues, dollies, gimbal, Steadicam... Chaque outil a ses avantages, mais aussi ses limites. Sur un plateau, j'aime venir avec un TRINITY et un Steadicam. Et jutilise loutil le plus adapt en fonction de lhistoire raconter.

Je suis op rateur Steadicam depuis 2007, mais quand jai d couvert le TRINITY en 2017, jai tout de suite vu les nouvelles possibilit s quoffraient la machine en terme de narration , explique Matthieu Lornat. Avec son bras articul et sa nacelle, je peux manipuler plus largement la cam ra dans lespace pour r pondre une demande concr te du r alisateur sur le plateau. Mais je continue travailler r guli rement au Steadicam. Sur un tournage, jai toujours les deux machines pr tes fonctionner. Cela fait partie de ma prestation. Quand on refl chit la mani re de tourner un plan avec le directeur de la photo et le r alisateur, je propose loutil qui est le plus appropri .
Le seul souci, cest que le TRINITY nest pas encore tr s connu des r alisateurs. Cest un vrai frein , indique Matthieu Lornat. Il faut beaucoup expliquer les possiblit s de la machine. Sur la saison 8 de la s rie L o Matte , brigade des mineurs , diffus e sur TF1, jai fait beaucoup de plans au TRINITY. Aux essais cam ras, javais pris le temps de faire une d mo au directeur de la photo, Samuel Dravet, et au r alisateur, Herv Renoh. Ils ont trouv loutil g nial et vite compris comment ils pouvaient en tirer partie. Du coup, jai eu beaucoup de demandes de leur part sur le plateau.
