IPTV 2.0 Framework

At TV Connect 2014, Harmonic will unveil its IPTV 2.0 solution, a new video delivery framework that simplifies the migration to an all-IP and all-HTTP ABR streaming architecture. The IPTV 2.0 solution provides pay-TV service providers with a unified platform for broadcast and multiscreen delivery, lowering an operators capital and operating expenses while optimizing video quality on all screens, across all networks. Leveraging the bandwidth-efficient platform, operators can deliver more streams and value-added services like HD to their subscribers. The scalable platform can support hundreds of channels and millions of end-users without sacrificing video quality.

The IPTV 2.0 solution is based on a next-generation headend with unified broadcast and multiscreen components, including Harmonics market-leading ProStream(R) with ACE(R) real-time transcoder, ProMedia(R) Live real-time multiscreen transcoder, Electra(TM) multiservice encoder, and ProMedia Origin multiscreen stream packager and server.

ProMedia(R) Multiscreen Preparation Solution With HEVC and 4K Ultra HD Support

Harmonic will also demonstrate an end-to-end OTT multiscreen workflow with its ProMedia(R) multiscreen preparation solution -- the market share leader in multiscreen software transcoding. The latest features for the ProMedia family of integrated software applications include support for HEVC encoding and 4K Ultra HD video format; increased synergy with the Harmonic(R) MediaGrid shared storage system for the delivery of time-shifted TV services; and support for closed captioning, regional blackouts, and local ad insertion.

The addition of HEVC and Ultra HD support to the ProMedia family continues Harmonics market leadership position in implementing new standards. By providing up to 50 percent better compression efficiency than H.264, HEVC helps alleviate bandwidth constraints and enables the delivery of higher-resolution video to multiple screens. Additionally, the ProMedia Xpress high-performance transcoder supports the emerging Ultra HD format for VOD applications. HEVC and AVC transcoding of Ultra HD on ProMedia Xpress leverages Harmonics MicroGrid(TM) parallel-computing technology to achieve remarkable transcoding speeds, allowing Harmonic customers to unlock the bandwidth and video quality advantages of 4K Ultra HD content in a timely and cost-effective manner.
