Presidential inauguration: DA says venue change is a waste of money

Since it was announced that the presidential inauguration ceremony of the new President-Elect will be held at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, the Presidency has faced backlash from opposition parties.

As reported by EWN, the DA described the Presidency's decision to move the venue from the Union Buildings in Pretoria to the stadium in Tshwane as a waste of money.

Why was the presidential inauguration moved? According to the office of the president, the decision to move the ceremony to a stadium was to allow for greater public participation in this important national event.

The DA's Solly Malatsi noted, however, that not only was this an unnecessary exercise, it's also very costly.

It's a waste of money DA Malatsi, addressing the media at a press briefing in Parliament, on Thursday, criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa of neglecting the state of the country's economy in approving this move.

In the face of all of this, we can confirm the presidential inauguration, set to take place on 25 May at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, is set to cost South Africa R120 million, he said.

It does not seem like there is much that the DA can do about the change at this point.

The Presidency revealed that the theme of the inauguration will be: Together celebrating 25 years of freedom: Renewal and Growth for a better South Africa.

Aside from members of the public, it is expected that Heads of State and royalty from a number of countries will attend, as well as religious representatives, political parties, and representatives from regional, continental and international organisations and bodies such as the Southern African Development Community, the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN),

When will the inauguration take place? The presidential inauguration will take place on Saturday, 25 May in the City of Tshwane. The event will be broadcast live on all South African news networks.
