The countdown is on to the sixth Cape Town International Animation Festival with some exciting additions announced to the programme. Proudly presented by Animation SA, the festival takes place from 3 to 5 March 2017 at the River Club in Observatory and at the Labia in Gardens, Cape Town.
Offering something for all ages, the annual festival brings South Africans the chance to catch some of the world s best animated films as well as an exciting range of masterclasses and workshops with global industry leaders, providing a rare opportunity to engage with them.
We are delighted to announce exciting additions to our programme, says festival director Dianne Makings. We are honoured that John Shuzo Shiota, president and CEO of Polygon Pictures will be joining us to share his insights into running a successful Anime company. Attendees at the talk will also receive a free pass to the screening of Miss Hokusai in the outdoor theatre, courtesy of the Japanese Embassy.
Shiota participated in the launch of Dream Pictures Studio in 1997 before he moved to Polygon Pictures two years later. Over the course of three decades, Polygon has been a leader in its field and worked with clients such as Disney Television Animation, Lucasfilm, Hasbro Studios, Nickelodeon, Netflix, Amazon, Kodansha, Japan Broadcasting Corporation and Nippon Television Network Corporation. Polygon s work includes Ronja, the Robbers Daughter which won an Emmy Kids Award in the Animation category.
This is the first year that we have a Japanese focus at the festival and we couldn t be happier at the award winning films and speaker that form part of the programme. Japan is without a doubt one of the global leaders in the industry and there is a lot to learn from them, says Makings
Miss Hokusai has won a host of international awards including the Jury Award at the 39th Annecy Animation Film Festival. Katsushika Hokusai is one of the most globally famous Japanese artists. Miss Hokusai is the untold story of Master Hokusai s daughter: a lively portrayal of a free-spirited, utterly outspoken and highly talented woman, unfolding through the changing seasons.
There will also be a selection of screenings of amazing artists from the Japan Media Arts Festival, says Makings. We are also proud to announce that we have secured a once-off showing of Red Turtle, which is a nominee for the Best Animated Feature Film for the 89th Academy Awards.
Red Turtle is an animated fantasy film directed and co-written by Dutch-British animator Michael Dudok de Wit in his feature film debut. A co-production between Wild Bunch and Studio Ghibli, it tells the story of a man who becomes shipwrecked on a deserted island and meets a giant red turtle.
It is fitting that Red Turtle is one of the first events on our programme, and is a France/Belgium/Japan collaboration, celebrating three of the animation s world longest-standing leaders, says Makings. We proudly welcome our first Japanese delegation and we honour our French partners, who, through IFAS, have supported the Festival since its inception.
The Japanese Embassy and Consulate in Cape Town are proud of the collaboration with the CTIAF, which enabled an exciting line-up of Japanese Animation content at the CTIAF for the first time. We are honoured to have the participation of Mr Shuzo Shiota, President/CEO of Polygon Pictures. Please enjoy, we hope CTIAF 2017 results in enhanced interaction and Animation industry exchanges between South Africa and Japan, says Yasushi Naito, Consul of Japan Cape Town.
The line-up of speakers include Farnaz Esnaashari-Charmatz (Nick Animation Studio and creator of Shimmer and Shine); Ivan Rouveure from Les Armateurs whose work includes Oscar nominated film The Secret of Kells; Veronique Encrenaz from MIFA (March International du Film d Animation) and Nat Abraham and Craig McGillivray, the president and vice president of distribution, from the Canada-based Breakthrough Entertainment Inc, to name just a handful.
The CTIAF has become a significant fixture on the international festival calendar and provides a platform and marketplace for the fast-growing African animation industry. This year it received 221 entries for submissions from 40 countries. The festival also hosts business-to-business sessions, producer events, networking opportunities and government panel discussions in addition to student competitions, an outreach programme and outdoor screenings.
The CTIAF is made possible thanks to generous support from sponsors the National Film and Video Foundation; Wesgro; Animation SA and the French Institute of South Africa. CTIAF has also partnered with Nickelodeon and Draw for Life.
The Cape Town International Animation Festival takes place from 3 to 5 March 2017 at The River Club in Observatory, Cape Town. Screenings take place at the Labia in Gardens and Outdoor Theatre screenings will take place at the River Club.
