What drew you to live sports production, and how did you get started?

There was never a moment in my house when the TV didn't have a game on. Being a part of a Boston sports family, I distinctly remember learning the game of baseball while watching NESN broadcasts every summer night. Watching camera cuts, bug pops, and sideline hits from a young age always piqued my curiosity on how it all actually worked.

My first opportunity to work on a live sports production was in the sixth grade as a camera operator during a high school basketball game for my local community-access station, Holbrook Community Access and Media (HCAM). Having the opportunity to start in middle school gave me the chance to grow throughout high school, where I became the executive producer and play-by-play commentator of our basketball production for HCAM.

Are there any aha moments when you realized you really loved a particular role?

I can think of two. One came this past season when I interned for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League as a broadcast producer. Me and my co-producer Abby Smith (Boston University) were able to put together an incredible broadcast that featured six cameras, on-screen graphics, and replay. Through this incredible experience, I quickly learned how much I love telling the story from the switcher and leading an incredible group of people towards one goal of making the best product possible.

The other moment was when I had the opportunity to run replay for the first time at Harvard Athletics. Having full control behind telling the story of the game through bumps, halftime recaps, and end-of-game recaps sounded challenging at first, but I quickly got the hang of it during a basketball production at Harvard University. [Harvard Senior Associate Director, Athletics, Content and Strategic Communications] Imry Halevi and his wonderful producers Dillon Wall and Jamie Magone have made learning a role like replay in the control room so easy for me, and it has been extremely valuable for me in continuing my career in broadcast production.

What's the most challenging aspect of working in live sports production as a student?

Balancing an ever-changing schedule in live sports production with classes, exams, and papers is hard at times. While I spend my weekends roaming the sidelines for a Harvard Football game as a camera operator, I also take the time following a long shift to study for exams in the upcoming week, especially in November. It has been challenging at times but also rewarding after I'm able to manage my time efficiently while simultaneously preparing for broadcasts.

What are your career aspirations after graduation?

I want to continue working in live sports production as a broadcast producer in collegiate athletics.

What advice would you give to your freshman self?

Always say yes. You never know where an opportunity can take you, and being available is something you can always lean on. I would also tell myself that the steps I'm taking are the right ones and to never second-guess myself in this demanding industry.
