Story Highlights
More than 85% complete, SoFi Stadium, the future home of the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood, CA, is entering the final stages of construction, it was announced at a media event on Wednesday. The stadium's dual-sided 70,000-sq.-ft. scoreboard, dubbed the Oculus, will be the only two-sided oval centerhung videoboard at any venue.
The Oculus centerhung dual-sided videoboard at SoFi Stadium is currently under construction and will weigh 2.2 million lb. by the time it's finished.
The Oculus Videoboard
The Oculus measures 120 yd. long by 50 ft. high, currently weighing in at approximately 1 million lb. and will will weigh 2.2 million lb. (or 1,000 metric tons) when it is completed. Given the resolution, the Oculus will have the largest LED content-playback system ever deployed. Every face/display can be uniquely programmed with live content, statistics, or animated content. Since two teams will call SoFi Stadium home, the giant videoboard and screens throughout the venue are capable of being programmed seamlessly for each situation.
Rams COO Kevin Demoff told the Los Angeles Times that he expects the game-day fan experience to feature highlights from around the league and replays from in-house Skycams and pylon cameras. I can promise you, he said, the number of cameras we have in the stadium is Super Bowl-level.
The Chargers have brought in Pete Soto as VP, fan experience and Bolt Productions. Having formerly overseen game-day presentation and stadium/events production for the Atlanta Falcons at their three-year-old Mercedes-Benz Stadium, he will draw on his experience programming the venue's 360-degree Halo Board, which is currently the largest videoboard in professional sports at 63,000 sq. ft. Meanwhile, the Rams told the Times they will draw on the experience of playing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum over the past four seasons.
The ETFE Canopy Roof
SoFi Stadium will also feature an ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) roof supported by a double cable-net system, the largest such system in the world. A network of LED lights will project images on the 1 million sq. ft. roof canopy, creating a vast movie screen for both fans in their seats and airline passengers on arrival to [nearby] LAX, according to the Times report. Picture frames are steel frames that sit on top of the upper cable-net system. The entire picture-frame system is built on the ground, then hoisted and installed in place via cranes on the exterior of the building. There are a total of 302 picture frames (more than 120 have been installed to date).
Six Months Till Opening
The venue, which is estimated to cost $5 billion (by far the largest price tag ever for an NFL venue), will host its first event on July 25-26 when Taylor Swift's Lover Fest tour comes to town. In addition to serving as the home of both the Rams and Chargers, SoFi Stadium will host Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the 2023 CFP National Championship, and the 2028 Summer Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
