Communications primacy. With fiber optic communications available to only 7% of the US population and 16% of the developed world, even developing nations are acknowledging the economic value of the technology.

This renaissance in awareness has turned nations toward the reality that their ongoing economic prosperity is dependent upon embracing new technological models. The effect is that nations like Costa Rica are opting to institute national fiber optic data communications networks over enhanced transit infrastructure.

That's how crucial it is. Even the World Bank is viewing the technology as a key economic driver and advising national governments and large private players to prioritize coverage for underserved areas.
