Our data requirements have grown as exponentially as our use of the technology. That requires increased speed and capacity. What's next in fiber optic data communications? Let's look at how we can expect the sector to grow in the immediate future.
Getting the USA up to speed. Asian nations like Japan and South Korea have greatly outpaced the United States in terms of upgrading connection and data-sharing speeds. It may seem unthinkable to many of you reading this, but the USA doesn't even place in the top 5 countries for internet speeds.
But Latvia is. Yes. Latvia.
The USA ranks 16th. That's a problem in a world in which fiber optic communications are blooming toward a future of increased connectivity as a key indicator of national economic health.
But Google is taking that deficiency on. They've selected a handful of American cities for Google Fiber - a fiber optic solution that offers speeds 100 times faster than conventional internet connections.
While Verizon has managed to mount greater fiber optic coverage in the USA than the Google Fiber project, the speeds offered by the communications giant are only half what Google Fiber has offered three pilot cities.
So far, the project has been initiated in Kansas City, Austin and Provo. Cities across the USA, including Atlanta and Charlotte, SC are soon to follow, with Google Fiber's embrace to expand in the near future to other major American cities.
Communications primacy. With fiber optic communications available to only 7% of the US population and 16% of the developed world, even developing nations are acknowledging the economic value of the technology.
This renaissance in awareness has turned nations toward the reality that their ongoing economic prosperity is dependent upon embracing new technological models. The effect is that nations like Costa Rica are opting to institute national fiber optic data communications networks over enhanced transit infrastructure.
That's how crucial it is. Even the World Bank is viewing the technology as a key economic driver and advising national governments and large private players to prioritize coverage for underserved areas.
In the EU, the European Commission has undertaken to create global coverage over the next three years, insisting on speeds in excess of 30 mbps or greater by 2020. And how will they achieve this?
