Quincy Broadcast Transitions to Centralized Operations with Harris Broadcast

Stand 7.G20 - Harris Broadcast, a leader in delivering advanced, content-rich media experiences to consumers worldwide, announces that Quincy Broadcast, Print and Interactive, which operates 14 TV stations across six states, will boost efficiency for its hub and spoke model across 10 stations with Harris Broadcast technology. The solution enhances centralized monitoring and extends the reach of automated playout workflows, while modernizing HD infrastructures at local stations.

The Harris Broadcast solution will establish a common architecture across all 10 stations, providing flexibility for each station to leverage local sources and content. Centrally, Quincy operators will monitor over 30 live channels from three hubs with Harris Broadcast multiviewers; and distribute network programming using the Harris Broadcast automated content management and distribution platform.

The hub stations, located at KTTC in Rochester, Minnesota; WGEM-TV in Quincy, Illinois; and WXOW-TV in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, will monitor and distribute programming for one primary and two digital subchannels at each location. The system will accommodate a fourth subchannel for each station in the future. Locally, Harris Broadcast servers will enhance media ingest and playout efficiency, with Harris Broadcast online storage systems vastly increasing capacity at each station. Harris Broadcast routers will accommodate all in-plant signal distribution, with built-in SX Pro multiviewers to maximize space efficiency.

This solution gets these stations on the same platform, with the same exact gear and processes - and in many cases it was an ideal time as our facilities transition fully to HD, said Brady Dreasler, corporate director of engineering and operations, Quincy Broadcast, Print and Interactive. We can monitor more signals and take up a lot less floor space with the integrated routing and multiviewer solutions. We can downlink and time on-air programs once from the hubs and push the completed files out to each station. This eliminates a large number of satellite equipment and expenses, reduces steps, and take the burden off the receiving facilities.

The new centralized model follows on a recent Harris Broadcast Selenio deployment across all 14 Quincy stations for over-the-air signal encoding and site-to-site networking. Elsewhere, Quincy stations use Harris Broadcast transmitters ( seven years with the original tubes ) and Harris Broadcast media software for business operations - the latter of which he sees playing a significant role in the new model moving forward.

We were one of the early adopters of Harris Broadcast traffic software, and this new solution allows us to be end-to-end with Harris Broadcast from traffic to transmitter, he said. The tighter integration with the business systems and automation makes a lot of sense. And overall, we can handle secondary events from start to finish much more effectively in the new automated workflow.

The complete solution also features Harris Broadcast modular core processing systems and frame synchronizers and converters in the local infrastructure of each station. Both systems handle multiple signal conversion, processing and distribution tasks from space-efficient platforms.
