New Projector: Large Planetarium Reopened with Modern ZEI Projection Technology in Sri Lanka

During a state ceremony held at the beginning of December the large planetarium in Colombo opened its doors to visitors again with new, leading-edge technology. ZEISS equipped the planetarium in its 50th year of operation with a high-performance projection system for the 23-meter dome.

A ZEISS universal projection planetarium has been educating audiences in Sri Lanka on the subject of astronomy since its opening back in February 1965. Since then, the ZEISS projector has been functioning robustly and flawlessly and will continue to show brilliant stars on the artificial firmament of the large planetarium in the future. The new technology adds dome-size video projections to the traditional planetarium presentations. This enables not only the showing of modern full-dome films, but also the use of interactive computer visualizations. The shows permit the planetarium guests primarily children and young people to travel into the universe and explore many different objects in close-up.

The digital projection system consists of two extremely high-intensity projectors from Sony. Each of the two projectors generates a partial image for one half of the dome with a total surface area of 800 m , five to ten times the size of a traditional movie screen. The projectors are fitted with special ZEISS lenses. ZEISS developed the overall system and ensured that all projections appear razor-sharp and distortion-free on the dome. The modernized equipment from ZEISS also includes a surround sound system. Twelve computers work together to make the imagery and sound into an unforgettable experience for the planetarium visitors. ZEISS also provides seven different planetarium shows from international producers in the new full-dome format as part of the standard delivery package. Subjects related to popular science are the focus of the planetariums work.

The reopening was conducted by Dhara Wijayatilake, Sri Lankas Minister of Technology and Research, in the presence of the German Ambassador Dr J rgen Morhard, and representatives from renowned scientific institutes and planetariums. Its new technology makes the Colombo planetarium into one of the worlds most modern planetarium facilities.
