Peter Wharton, who served as Chief Strategy and Cloud Officer for TAG Video Systems and in several leadership roles at SMPTE during more than four decades in the media-technology industry, has died after a short illness.

Wharton joined TAG VS in October 2020 as Director, Corporate Strategy after two years working with the company as a consultant. During his time at the company, Wharton helped shape TAG's overall strategy and played a pivotal role in opening TAG's platform to new applications and increasing its international market share.

Peter was an amazing friend, generous, thoughtful and kind with a huge heart, Paul Briscoe, chief architect at TAG, wrote on LinkedIn. He could be as objective or subjective as a situation called for, was persnickety on demand and always brought an enlightening and thought-provoking point of view to any conversation.

Knowing Peter has enriched me personally and professionally in more ways than I can count, Briscoe continued. We've talked about the widest range of things from deeply personal to highly technical to arcane nonsense, and all of it built a beautiful basis for a friendship which I hold close to my heart and will forever I miss him terribly but he succeeded in leaving a big mark on me, on the industry and on everyone he knew. It's this legacy that we carry with us, and I will forever use the what would Peter do' test to better understand things.

Wharton, a SMPTE Fellow, previously served as SMPTE's Membership VP and as the Secretary/Treasurer and Eastern Regional Governor. For more than 20 years, he produced the Bits By The Bay SMPTE technology conference in the Washington DC area.

He previously served as CTO for BroadStream Solutions and held numerous positions at Grass Valley/Miranda Technologies ranging from business development to product management, development, and engineering. He began his career in the engineering department of ABC News and ABC Radio in 1980 and went on to serve as Manager of White House and Special Events Engineering for Fox News Channel in the late 90's. Wharton also founded Happy Robotz LLC, a media technology engineering, development and consulting company in 2017.
