What happens when you combine kick-ass company projects with rad events like go-kart racing and baseball games, and then sprinkle on some GoPro inspiration from execs like CEO Nick Woodman? You get the intern experience of a lifetime, and this year, we were able to show off their adventures through the #GoProIntern Social Media Challenge. The summer competition consisted of a series of weekly photo/video challenges that culminated in the first ever GoPro Intern Film Festival.
Leading up to the Film Festival, each week's social media challenge encouraged our 57 interns to eat, sleep, and breathe GoPro. Some challenges pushed them to experiment with their cameras, while other tasks challenged them to leave get out of the office and explore the great outdoors. Basically, our interns were able to flood their Instagram profiles with pictures and videos of them living out the GoPro brand, attached with the #GoProIntern tag that undoubtedly sparked some jealousy from their interning friends cooped up in the copy room.
To cap it all off, the interns competed for ultimate glory in the first ever GoPro Intern Film Festival. The requirements were simple: 30-90 seconds of 100% GoPro footage from their intern experience. Judged by members from GoPro's Education, Social, and Entertainment teams, each video was evaluated on creativity, variety, and overall content.
First Place - Brandon Jackson
Since they were divided into two groups based on start date, Group 1 of the 2016 intern squad was up first with Sales Intern Max McKone coming in third place for a unique POV video documenting his passion for lacrosse. Nicco Ramirez took second place with his honest perspective of how GoPro helped him transition from island living in Southeast Asia to finding a job in the real-world'. BUT first place went to Legal Intern, Brandon Jackson who decided to cast his little sister and make ordinary moments like playing the piano or riding a tricyle- something extraordinary. Brandon showed that you don't have to jump out of a plane or dive with sharks to represent GoPro. As long as you're doing what you love and sharing it with the world, you're part of the GoPro brand- and that may be the best lesson of them all.
Second Place - Nicco Ramirez
While Brandon, Nicco, and Max took the official titles, two videos received honorable mention since they were disqualified for falling outside the time limit. Corporate Communications Intern Chris Prado recounted the honeysuckle memories of his internship with a drone shot that'll give any skateboarder goose bumps and an epic montage of some incredible views he found throughout the summer. Next up, Social Intern Mike Maholias documented his days spent surfing under the Golden Gate and camping in Yosemite through a heartfelt video dedicated to his dog and best friend. Warning: bring tissues- this one is a tearjerker.
Third Place - Max McKone
Although each video captured the individual experiences of our 2016 intern class, the festival showed that our interns did more than work for GoPro- they became part of the family. We're not sure if the interns or their teams are more bummed to see the summer set, but one thing's for sure- an internship with GoPro is anything but ordinary. Group 1 set the bar pretty high, but stay tuned to see what Group 2 of the 2016 intern squad has in store for us
