The IPS Training Weekend 2026

13 - 15 March 2026 at University of Warwick Conference Centre

The Institute of Professional Sound (IPS) have announced that The IPS Training Weekend 2026 will be taking place between 13 - 15 March 2026. Based in the Conference Centre at the University of Warwick, UK, the residential event is open to members and non-members, and will include a whole host of talks led by industry experts, along with spatial audio listening rooms and a number of lounge and bar areas for socialising and networking.

Session Programme Setting up a desk Want to know how to configure a desk in a hurry? Watch Antony Shaw, Sound Supervisor from Spiritland, configure an SSL mixing desk from scratch ready for a music session, covering the key points and short cuts.

Spatial Audio Microphone Techniques Dr Russell Mason, Senior Lecturer on the Tonmeister Course at University of Surrey, will take us through different mic set-ups for capturing spatial audio, with practical demos of music, atmospheres and sports event recordings

Smart Cinema Dubbing Mixer Andrew Wilson is part of an innovative research project at Bristol University that used an advanced sound capture setup (including a PCMA-3D mic rig) to record sound during two live music performances for playback in the universitys purpose-built Smart Cinema. Andrew will discuss the concept and workflow of the project and delve into the Pro Tools session to show how he created a Dolby Atmos mix to recreate, as faithfully as possible, the live-audience experience.

Theatre Sound Design Award winning Sound Designer Emma Laxton will describe the process for planning and executing the sound design for a modern theatrical production and how to translate that to Digital Theatre.

The Good, the Bad and the Dante Dante in a practical setting Technical Guru Mike Ransome of Everything Audio has built numerous Dante rigs for many TV shows. In this session he will show us some good practices, some less so, and a few common gotchas that might turn things a bit ugly.

In-Car Microphone Rigs How do you rig a travelling car with four people and no crew in sight? Location Recordist Nick Olorenshaw (Grand Tour and Clarksons Farm) on how to rig different vehicles for the best results. Covering mic choices and placement, monitoring and comms.

Can You Hear Me Now? - Comms Systems Its that Mike Ransome again, who will run us through some of the common terms, what they mean and the methods used to achieve them.

All tickets include: attendance at all sessions, any support materials, your own en-suite double-bedded hotel standard accommodation (Friday night, Saturday night), all meals (Friday dinner; Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner; Sunday breakfast and lunch), all-day refreshments and car parking.

There are also a limited number of subsidised student places priced at £100, and three student places with a further 50% discount, for those who are happy to work at the event in return.
