Industry Mourns Telemetrics, Inc. Founder Anony Cuomo

Mahwah, NJ (March 18, 2013) The broadcast industry lost one of its pioneers this week with the passing of Anthony Cuomo, Senior, on March 6th.

Mr. Cuomo, aged 85, was the founder of Telemetrics, Inc., a New Jersey based company that revolutionized the broadcast television industry with its Portable Triax Camera System. Using the device, cameramen could more easily cover live sports and other events and capture the action from an up-close field position. It is generally agreed that Telemetrics equipment was instrumental in changing the style of network programming during the 1970s and 1980s, and in particular sports coverage such as the Olympics and the Indianapolis 500. Based on these successes, the Triax System was quickly implemented for use at political conventions and other events, extending the networks' capability to capture the human drama. In 1991, the Telemetrics Triax Multiplexing Camera Control System was awarded an Emmy.

Under Mr. Cuomo's leadership, Telemetrics is also credited with initiating and driving development of camera robotics and control systems used by major networks and television stations around the world, as well as in the education, military, government and medical markets.

Mr. Cuomo was a Bronx native and earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College. Prior to founding Telemetrics, Mr. Cuomo worked as an engineering manager for North American Phillips Broadcast. When the company relocated to Europe in 1971, he continued his work on developing the Triax Camera System with Hughes Sports Network and later with Editel Production. In 1973, he started Telemetrics in the basement of his Upper Saddle River home and within a year had landed major contracts with RCA and Hitachi.

Mr. Cuomo is survived by his wife Clara, son Anthony and daughter Mary, and their families. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Valley Hospice Care in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
