Telemetrics Camera Control Systems Integral to Unique Flying Eye Hospital Robotic Cameras Turn Operating Theater into Classroom

Mahwah, NJ (March 19, 2013) For the past 18 years, Telemetrics camera control systems have been used for instructional teaching on the world's only airborne ophthalmic training facility, a DC-10 named the Flying Eye Hospital (FEH). And when ORBIS International, the non-profit organization behind the FEH, inaugurates its new MD-10 aircraft later this year, it too will be outfitted with Telemetrics camera control systems.

The Telemetrics CTS Camera Track System and accompanying RCP Desktop Touchscreen Control Panel are central to the aircraft's state of the art treatment facility and high tech classroom. Video of the procedure is transmitted to the classroom in the front of the plane for instructional viewing by local health care professionals and attendees can interact directly with the surgeon performing the procedure.

The Telemetrics robotic camera control system works so effectively that we didn't make any changes to the design for the new aircraft other than to make the overhead track system a little larger, said Gangadhar Jalli, Audio Visual Support Manager, ORBIS International. Otherwise, we still use the same pan/tilt unit and controller.

The new operating theater features the overhead CTS-H track system complete with an HDSC-1 robotics camera that is side-mounted on a PT-CP-S4 pan/tilt unit. Mr. Jalli remotely operates the system from the AV room using the Telemetrics RCP Desktop Touchscreen Control Panel to fine tune camera images and make precise adjustments to pan/tilt/zoom and speed. A monitor in the operating theater allows the surgeon to view what the system is seeing and he/she can ask Mr. Jalli for different angles or views to improve the viewing experience for the local medical professionals in attendance.

The Telemetrics system allows me to follow the surgeon's movements closely without being in the way or having cables hanging down and its quiet movement doesn't disturb the surgeon or the trainees, adds Mr. Jalli. It's a great teaching aid and excellent technology for our purposes.

During flight, the camera track system and pan/tilt unit remain in place but the camera is removed and packed away and the other equipment is strapped down. Once the plane lands at the destination, the AV equipment is unpacked and put into hospital mode, in preparation for the surgical procedures and teaching sessions. Each visit lasts an average of two to three weeks and the Telemetrics system helps ORBIS to maximize the program and train as many medical professionals as possible during that time.

ORBIS has operated the Flying Eye Hospital since 1982 and since that time the hospital has visited 77 countries, and conducted 279 training and service programs in 154 cities. According to Mr. Jalli, the new FEH is expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2013. Installation and commissioning of the camera control system will be performed by Telemetrics engineers.

Mr. Jalli concludes, We're very much looking forward to using the new aircraft. The Telemetrics system makes our efforts in combating avoidable blindness that much easier.
