New Orleans, LA - November 17, 2014: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Aspera, an IBM company, has achieved groundbreaking global WAN file transfer speeds of up to 80 Gbps on a single server through a partnership with Intel that brings together a next generation prototype of Aspera's transport software and Intel's standard-setting processing power. This latest result in an ongoing research and development collaboration between industry leaders Intel and Aspera will be showcased at the Super Computing conference in New Orleans this week.
The combination of next-generation Aspera FASP software with Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 Product Family, Intel DDIO and DPDK doubles the previous speed benchmarks achieved with Aspera technology by sending the equivalent of 1 TB of data over a WAN in approximately two minutes. This ability to connect high-performance computing locations with extreme high-speed speed data transfer capabilities on commodity hardware demonstrates the potential for any organization working with large data sets to accelerate big data research and collaboration while also reducing data center costs.
This achievement is built upon a prototype of the next generation Aspera FASP transport software, which overcomes the bottlenecks of traditional transport protocols in moving large data over the wide area network. Aspera FASP has no theoretical throughput limit and is only constrained by the available network bandwidth and the hardware resources at both ends of the transfers. In this proof-of-concept Aspera FASP works with the Intel DPDK to directly access the network interface controller and bypass the kernel networking stack. Aspera and Intel enable organizations to overcome these remaining end point barriers and push the limits of high-speed transfer capabilities.
In order to maximize high-throughput IO, the Aspera-Intel collaboration features Intel Server Board S2600WT, Intel Xeon processor E5-2697 v3, DDR4 memory, Intel Communications Chipset 89xx Series, Intel XL710 Ethernet Controller (40GbE), Intel Solid-State Drives P3700 Series, Intel DPDK 1.7, Intel DDIO and Intel AES-NI GCM encryption.
The demo also highlights the Aristas flagship 7500E, powered by Aristas Extensible Operating System (EOS ), with deep buffers, 10G, 40G and 100G port densities and advanced features for mission critical data centers, big-data and HPC environments.
The initial application of the Aspera-Intel-Arista demonstration focuses on life sciences, where the pace of discovery has been hampered by bottlenecks in file transfer that have hindered collaboration and information sharing - crucial challenges for clinicians and scientists in the field.
The collaboration between Aspera and Intel addresses head-on the classical barriers to collaboration and scientific discovery - distance and data size - delivering on the promise of the Science DMZ, making it practical to transmit massive datasets across the WAN, removing all constraints on where the data, the analytics, and the expertise reside, noted Kristina Kermanshahche, Chief Architect of Health & Life Sciences, Intel Corporation.
Life sciences organizations need to dramatically reduce analytics time and speed up clinical interventions, but most still rely on shipping physical disks due to inherent problems with existing networks and transfer protocol inefficiencies, Michelle Munson, CEO and Co-Founder, Aspera, an IBM company. Spending days just to transport data is not a viable option, so our focus is on creating a technology infrastructure for file transfer that will catalyze the transition from 1GbE to 10GbE and beyond.
Although the demo features usage models from the life sciences industry, it provides a glimpse into the future of big data management in the cloud for any industry reliant on big data file transfer in and out of the cloud. Media and broadcast companies, along with energy, financial services, and legal firms, also are transforming their workflows and research processes with ultra-high sped file transfer capabilities.
Attendees of the SC2014 can see the demo live at booth #658 in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Engage in discussion High-speed Data Transfer and Sharing in Scientific Research Environments with Aspera and BioTeam at the Intel Community Hub, booth #1315, from 2-3 pm, Wednesday, November 19.
