The AFDA Board of Education announces call for Postgraduate Honours Development Bursaries

The AFDA Board of Education (ABE), has announced that applications for the Honours Development Bursary for Motion Picture are open for 2017.

This scholarship is awarded either for the following AFDA qualification: POSTGRADUATE BA HONOURS in Motion Picture. The value of the scholarship is part or full value of 1 year full-time of the course's tuition fees only from January 2017 - December 2017. Current AFDA 3rd year students, previous AFDA BA graduates and outside RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) candidates may apply.

The AFDA postgraduate school is focused on developing innovative research, origination, production and distribution of entertainment concepts for both local and international markets.

Over the last fifteen years, the AFDA Postgraduate School has produced a large network of graduates who have made a significant contribution to the South African entertainment industry. A large percentage of commercials, feature films, television series, music and retail content is produced by AFDA honours graduates.

ABE SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA give consideration to:

Academic excellence: Qualify with the minimum requirements

Discipline excellence: Consideration of degree/university electives and/or experience/learning in a related area

Capacity for teaching, mentoring, administrative or marketing.

Financial status: Evidence of lack of capacity to afford fees.

Most recent academic qualification results available / certificate of tertiary qualification achieved

Max 2 Page CV

1 Page Motivation Letter (no longer than 1 page) on why you should receive an AFDA Development Bursary

Include in your motivation letter OR provide a separate document regarding your financial status and need for tuition support.

Friday 30 September 2016

Delivery method must be either via email or physical drop off at the Marketing office of the specific campus.

There is no application fee. Applicants will be reviewed and short-listed applicants may be invited for an interview.

Student Profile:

SHAUN GOUWS (Honours, AFDA Johannesburg)

Shaun Gouws obtained his Honours Degree in Motion Picture Medium in 2006 majoring in Producing. In 2007 he started working in the Promo department at Studio Zoo where after he moved on to become Head of Production at Ontwerp.tv, a boutique Commercials Production Company based in Bryanston, Johannesburg.

After exploring and producing longer format mediums over a couple of years Shaun accepted a job offer in 2012 at Penguin Films in Cape Town where he Production Managed a 13 Episode Series for kykNet. Several of his films are currently screening on Movie Magic and the SABC and have won numerous awards at various film festivals. He gained a lot of experience working in the commercial industry dealing with clients like McCann Worldwide, Draft FCB, Ireland Davenport, The Jupiter Drawing Room and Leo Burnett.

Shaun has produced numerous Television Commercials, Music Videos, Short films, as well as Production Managed series. Shaun firmly believes that South Africa has a wealth of truly inspirational stories waiting to be told and there is no reason for aspiring young talent not to do so.
