Miners Shot Down Continues to Create Waves in the Festival Circuit
It is impossible not to be both appalled and deeply moved by not only the human injustice but also the political tragedy which Marikana represents. It is essential viewing. It is impossible to watch without feeling a profound sense of outrage. (Lee Hall, screenwriter Inter Alia of Billy Elliot).
Miners Shot Down has been nominated for competition at two of Africa's most prestigious film festivals: Luxor in Egypt and FESPACO in Burkina Faso.
We are overjoyed about the prospect of millions of Africans seeing this story on TV sets and in local cinemas. Both of these festivals are highly respected and this will give further exposure to one of South Africa's most important events in the post apartheid period. Outside of Africa, the documentary has been nominated for the Cinema for Peace Award. The Gala event will take place in Berlin on 9 February 2015.
The Cinema for Peace Award for Justice was initiated in 2009, together with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno-Ocampo. Several winning films have been screened at special occasions and campaigns, including at the UN General Assembly and in a campaign to save Sakineh Ashtiani from death by stoning.
Since 2002, the annual Cinema for Peace Gala in Berlin has aimed to raise awareness of the social relevance of film and to make active use of the influence of movies and documentaries on the perception and resolution of the global social, political and humanitarian challenges of our time. In recent years Cinema for Peace has also established itself in New York, Los Angeles and Cannes, and has supported a number of important causes with the help of artists such as Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and personalities such as the Dalai Lama, Muhammad Ali, Bill and Hillary Clinton, president Mikhail Gorbachev and our former Honorary Patron Nelson Mandela.

On the 25th January 2015, the film won the Black Movie Film Festival Audience Best Film Award.
It's heartwarming to be picked out by the audience as Best Film. We were up against some amazing and high quality films at the Black Movie Film Festival. Power to the people. (Rehad Desai).
Lastly, the film has had many international screenings hosted by a diverse range of organisations. The last screening in London's Limewharf, served to drum up support for a protest scheduled to take place outside Lonmin's annual AGM on the 29th Jan. The estimated 100 shareholders that will attend the AGM will be given an open letter from the Marikana Support Campaign and a DVD of Miners Shot Down. The makers of the film, who are also active in the justice campaign, really want the shareholders to get the full story behind the massacre.
