Johanne Defay Dominates at Fiji Pro

A couple months ago, GoPro welcomed professional surfer Johanne Defay to the GoPro Surf Team, and today, we're popping bottles to celebrate her winning performance at the 2016 WSL Fiji Pro this past weekend.

Starting in 2015, when Defay locked in her first CT title at the Vans US Open in Huntington Beach, Calif., she put herself on the WSL's map as a major contender. Now, Defay is proving herself as a force to be reckoned with by securing arguably the biggest victory of her career at the Fiji Pro against three-time World Champion Carissa Moore.

While this was Defay's first time competing in the Fiji Pro, Cloudbreak held an all-too-familiar feeling to her home break of Saint-Leu, on Reunion Island, France. Growing up there proved to be the perfect training for Cloudbreak's renowned lefts, so Defay held nothing back on Monday afternoon as she held the lead through the final heat. Her victory pushed her right to the No. 4 Spot on the Jeep Leaderboard, positioning her as a serious world title contender. Cheers to that, Defay!

Whether it was capturing her celebration on Cloudbreak or charging in Reunion Island, Defay has been using her GoPro to capture and share her life in and out of the water, whether that be surfing, mountain biking, trail running, skateboarding, swimming or yoga. But, she's not the only one continuing to push the limits with her GoPro. All our athletes have been using their cameras to capture their experiences in creative and inspiring ways, which is why we are excited to introduce our 2016 GoPro Challenge.

GoPro teamed up with the WSL at the Fiji Pro to create a contest within a contest that is going to push the creativity of competing athletes to new levels - game on. WSL competitors are being asked to submit GoPro-shot edits for the opportunity to take home prizes, titles and lifelong bragging rights for their awesome footage.

Dubbed the 2016 GoPro Challenge, the contest asks competing WSL athletes to get creative with their GoPro to capture the best footy of the competition, venue and surrounding areas. To help, GoPro is providing several GoPro Challenge kits on site, which can be easily checked out with Anthony Walsh (if you don't know him, he's the guy surfing this crazy wave).

The contest kicked off last week, two days before the start of the Fiji Women's Pro, and will run until the Fiji Pro ends, which could be as late as June 17.

A few epic entries are already up and running on the WSL website, and all entries from the contest will have a chance to be featured by the WSL online, during live broadcasts and across its social channels. This means family, friends, and fans will be able to share in the GoPro Challenge experience as well.

At the end of the contest, the winning video will be selected from a panel five judges - three from WSL and two from GoPro - based on cinematography, technical prowess, perspective and overall beauty. The lucky winner will take home up to $15,000, depending on if the clip is captured at an official CT or during a free surf.

While all the Fiji Pro athletes are already champions for getting out there and pursuing their passions, only a select few will obtain 2016 GoPro Challenge glory.
