Times Media Films succeeds in bid to overturn FPB classification on Dis Ek, Anna --

Times Media Films, distributor of the Afrikaans language feature film, Dis ek, Anna (It s Me, Anna) has won its appeal against the 18 (L) (V) (SV) classification imposed on the film by the Film Publication Board (FPB) on 4 September 2015. The film has now been assigned a restrictive age classification of 16 (L)(V). In addition this classification must be accompanied by a cautionary strip reading: The contents of this film might upset sensitive viewers .

Times Media Films is thrilled with the outcome of the appeal because we feel strongly that this film has to be made available to younger audiences since they are the most vulnerable group, says Times Media Film GM Driki van Zyl. We would like Dis ek, Anna to open the debate about sexual abuse in our society and the devastating affect that this has one young boys and girls.

Dis ek, Anna is produced by Niel van Deventer of Palama Productions, directed by Sara Blecher and stars Charlen Brouwer in the title role, along with Morn Visser, Nicola Hanekom, Marius Weyers, Eduan van Jaarsveldt, Drikus Volschenk and newcomer Izel Bezuidenhout as young Anna. Dawid Minnaar, Elize Cawood, Hykie Berg, Ilze Klink and Fezile Mpela round out the cast.

We made this film in the hope that it would make a difference in the lives of young victims of sexual abuse and offer hope to those who feel helpless or voiceless, says van Deventer. This is the best possible outcome for us and we welcome the new classification.

The film based on Anchien Troskie s best-selling fictionalised autobiographical novels Ek, Anna and Die Staat Teen Anna Bruwer, describes the sexual abuse suffered by young Anna Bruwer at the hands of her stepfather from the age of 12. While the filmmakers have handled the subject with great sensitivity and care, the film confronts abuse head on.

Dis ek, Anna is distributed by Time Media Films and goes on general release at cinemas nationally on 23 October 2015.
