DocfilmSA Delegation at 25th edition of Sheffield Doc/Fest

The Documentary Filmmakers Association of South Africa (DFA), in association with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), has put together and official South African delegation, to represent the country during Sheffield Doc/Fest. Documentary filmmakers will form part of this delegation and will be joined by members of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and other filmmakers who are funded by the DTI's individual schemes or self-funded. They will be showcasing, networking and marketing their films.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the UK's largest documentary festival as it marks its 25th year. Sheffield Doc/Fest began in 1994 showing 42 films over two days to an audience of about 2,000. It has since grown to a six-day event screening more than 200 films that in 2017 attracted more than 39,000 people.

Delegates include DFA Board members, Desmond Naidoo, Pat van Heerden, Enver Samuel and Obakeng Malope. Other filmmakers at the festival; Angus Whitty, Molatelo Mainetje, Isa-Lee Jacobson, Nqaba Ngoyi, Laurence Hamburger, Pascale Neusch fer, Xoliswa Sithole, Mpho Montsho, Paul John Myburgh, Miki Redelinghuys, Sara Blecher, Jo lle Chesselet, Peter Goldsmid, Andrew King, Marc Schwinges, Lieza Louw and Mark Kaplan.

also participated in a panel discussion titled NEW DEVICES - NEW VOICES: PAN-AFRICAN EXPERIENCES which examined how filmmakers from the African Continent are using storytelling in new and innovative ways. Documentary makers are devising new and innovative ways to tell stories using more affordable technology, widening access to new potential filmmakers. From made-for-mobile to branded content, and TV formats to features, filmmakers are working across different platforms, and with international collaborations and co-productions, which are transforming the way stories emerge from across Africa. The session was moderated by DFA Board member Pat van Heerden from Media 24 and featured participants Enver Samuel from EMS Productions, Molatelo Mainetje from Bolobathaba Media.

The Documentary Filmmakers' Association (DFA) was established to nurture and develop the interests of documentary filmmakers in South Africa. Documentaries tell stories of ordinary and extraordinary people and communities - they celebrate, question, investigate and reflect. The most accessible genre of filmmaking, it is often marginalised by the broadcast industry and by other sectors / genres within the film and video production industry. The DFA aims to unify documentary filmmakers and gain recognition for the genre. It remains the only association in South Africa with the sole purpose of assisting, protecting and promoting documentary filmmakers. The DFA is a key member of SASFED (The South African Screen Federation).
